Our Mission

the Department of History

The Department of History offers a broad introduction to the discipline consistent with the university’s liberal arts tradition.  History studies humanity’s past endeavors and achievements with particular concentration on its relevance to contemporary society.  The study of history promotes an understanding of the interaction of individuals and groups, and their effect on government, culture, religion, economics, and society.

The history curriculum exposes students to fundamental content knowledge, supplies training in research skills appropriate to the discipline, and cultivates effective oral and written communication.  Through these methods, the department endows its graduates with a background useful to academic, professional, and vocational pursuits.

Our Student Learning Objectives

A student who successfully completes the history curriculum will:

  • Acquire fundamental content knowledge in global and American history.
  • Demonstrate competency in research skills appropriate to the discipline.
  • Communicate effectively in both written and oral formats.
