RECENT NEWS Erick Saoud Performs with Ouachita Percussion Ensemble Erick Saoud (Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Episcopal Collegiate School) was on campus this fall and performed with the Ouachita Percussion Ensemble for their “African Celebration” concert. Saoud is an expert on West African percussion and taught Percussion Ensemble students traditional songs and dances and how to play authentic xylophones, called gyils. Saoud earned music education and performance degrees from the University of Florida and the University of Central Arkansas, with primary teachers including Norm Weinberg, Gary Cook and Tom Burritt. He is a proud endorser of Grover Pro Percussion and Salyers Percussion.
Katie McManus Wins Concerto Competition Katie McManus, a senior percussion and music education major from Buford, Ga., won first place in Ouachita’s annual McBeth Concerto Competition playing Ney Rosauro’s “Marimba Concerto No. 1.” In addition to a cash prize, Katie has earned opportunities to perform the concerto with the Ouachita Wind Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble this spring.
