Registered Dietitian Requirements

  1. Complete a bachelor's degree or a master's degree and receive a verification statement from an ACEND®-accredited program (Didactic Program in Dietetics, Coordinated Program, Graduate Program or Foreign Dietitian Education Program). Note, effective Jan. 1, 2024, a graduate degree will be required to be eligible to take the Commission on Dietetic Registration Exam.
  2. Complete an ACEND®-accredited supervised practice Dietetic Internship program or Individual Supervised Practice Pathway is an option. Supervised practice/experiential learning is combined with the Coordinated Program and Graduate Program.
  3. Pass the Commission on Dietetic Registration's dietetic registration exam.
  4. Gain licensure in your state of practice, if applicable.
  5. Maintain continuing education.

While state interpretations of statutes may vary, it is ACEND's considered opinion that the program meets the educational requirements for dietetics licensure and certification in all states. However, completing an ACEND-accredited academic program alone does not qualify an individual for licensure or certification as a dietitian in any state. Individuals should review their state's licensing statutes and regulations to understand the specific requirements, including supervised practice and examinations, needed to obtain a dietetics license. More information about state licensure and certification can be found at this link: State Licensure.
