Huckabee School of Education

Merribeth D. Bruning

“Welcome to the Michael D. Huckabee School of Education, Ouachita Baptist University!”

The School of Education has two departments.  The Department of Education has majors in Early Childhood, Middle School, and Secondary Education which lead to licensure for teaching.  An interdisiplinary minor in  Education and Public Policy provides expertise for future policy makers.  There is also an approved Fifth-Sixth Grade Endorsement.  The Department of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies prepares graduates in three tracks:  Fitness, Recreation, and Teaching.  Candidates can minor in Kinesiology, Recreation, Recreation Ministry, and Health.   Endorsements in Health Education and Coaching are also available.

At Ouachita Baptist University we build a community that exhibits “love of God and love of learning.”  Dedicated and experienced professors teach small classes.  Early in each program, we provide opportunities to observe and participate in community projects and schools.  We believe these experiences help to develop strategies for learning and growing that are beneficial for all.  Interaction with individuals of diverse backgrounds provides our candidates opportunities to demonstrate care and also to build competence in their areas of study.  This is accomplished in a Christ-centered environment.

OBU provides both challenge and support.  Research undergirds the teaching and the experiences of our outstanding faculty in each of the departments in our School.  Advances in research are enabling us to better understand how individuals learn and the importance of the role of families to help students reach their full potential.  We are also continuing to discover the importance of exercise and nutrition for building and maintaining excellent physical, mental, and spiritual health. Faculty assist students in achieving the knowledge and skills needed to be successful and to serve others.

At OBU, students also develop friendships that will be foundational for entering a variety of career paths.  Students/candidates find the importance of the spiritual component in life and integrate it throughout the educational experience in both personal and professional relationships.

Please examine the information in our website.  Let us know if we can be of assistance to you, your family, and friends.  We look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,
