The Ouachita Baptist University Tiger football team has accepted an invitation to play in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl in Copperas Cove, Texas, on Saturday, Dec. 7.
The 7-3 Tigers of the Great American Conference will face the 7-3 Tarleton State Texans, who claimed a share of the Lone Star Conference title. The game will be played at Bulldawg Stadium in Copperas Cove with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The Tigers and Texans have faced off three times previously, with the Tigers leading the all-time series 2-1. Tiger Head Coach Todd Knight said he is happy to see the 2013 Tigers’ success being rewarded with the bowl invitation.
“Our student athletes, coaches, managers and trainers are all deserving of this honor and we look forward to playing the Lone Star Co-Champion Tarleton State University,” Coach Knight said.
Athletic Director David Sharp said he also is pleased about the Tigers’ bowl opportunity. “This team has worked hard all season and has been successful both on and off the field,” Sharp said. “I’m very happy that the players get the chance to play one more game this year.”
The Heart of Texas Bowl is sponsored by C.H.A.M.P.S. (Communities Helping Americans Mature, Progress and Succeed), a school-based program aimed at educating students about the dangers of the abuse of illicit drugs and alcohol. It was founded by Copperas Cove Head Coach and Athletic Director Jack Welch.
Participating teams will arrive Friday before the game. The bowl committee will provide meals and entertainment for the participants, including a Friday night banquet. Both teams also will have the opportunity to participate in learning and community engagement activities while in Copperas Cove.
Prior to the game between the Tigers and the Texans, the Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals will face off against the Thunderbirds of Mesa Community College. The matchup will feature two of the nation’s top National Junior College Athletic Association teams. The Cardinals are ranked 6th and the Thunderbirds are ranked 15th. Kickoff for the first match is set for 11 a.m.
Tickets will be available on Monday, Nov. 25. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students. Tickets can be purchased through the office of the Ouachita Athletic Department by calling (870) 245-5182 or by emailing email@example.com. Tickets are good for both games that day.
