Ouachita Baptist University will host the Arkansas Federation of Music Clubs state convention on Friday and Saturday, May 3-4, on the Ouachita campus. The state organization is affiliated with the National Federation of Music Clubs.
Club members from across the state will attend the two-day event. Barbara Baugh will be installed as the organization’s new president, succeeding current president Bill Yick.
Several Ouachita faculty members will help provide leadership for the annual convention. Dr. Ouida Keck, OBU’s Addie Mae Cox Professor of Music, and her husband, Dr. George Keck, professor emeritus of music, are serving as local arrangement chairs.
“Since we are featuring several Ouachita faculty members and students, this is a wonderful opportunity for people throughout the state to see the many things Ouachita has to offer,” Dr. Ouida Keck noted.
The convention’s opening dinner is set for Friday at 5:30 p.m. Tressa Tiner, winner of the state Wendell Irish Viola Award, will perform at the dinner.
David Stanley, an OBU instructor of music and countertenor, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Stanley, the 2013 Marie Smallwood Thomas Award recipient, will be accompanied by Ouachita faculty members Dr. Cai Lei on harpsichord and piano and Kristen Grant on flute.
Saturday’s schedule will begin with district meetings at 8:30 a.m. The 9 a.m. state convention business meeting will include performances by Arkansas Student/Collegiate Audition winners and Ouachita students T.J. Bailey, a senior worship arts major from Fort Smith, Ark., and Caitlin Secrest, a senior vocal performance major from Arkadelphia, Ark.
Saturday morning sessions will include an honors recital featuring Jr. Festival Superior winners and a workshop on “World Music through Percussion” by Dr. Ryan Lewis, OBU assistant professor of music.
The convention will conclude with a 12:30 p.m. luncheon at the Elrod Center for Family & Community, hosted by members of the Arkadelphia Philharmonic Club.
