The Ouachita Baptist University Lady Tigers have defeated both the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in their first-ever NCAA Division II South Region tournament. They now face No. 1 seed Delta State (28-6) in tonight’s regional championship matchup. The winner of tonight’s 7 p.m. game at Walter Sillers Coliseum in Cleveland, Miss., will advance to the Elite Eight in San Antonio on March 24.
The Lady Tigers’ latest victory came March 14 against No. 25 Tampa, with Ouachita winning 77-74.
Ouachita’s Domino Miller sank two free throws with 5.5 seconds left and Gianna Messina’s shot at the buzzer for Tampa hit off the front iron as the Lady Tigers survived a tremendous comeback from the Spartans.
“I was thinking I am a good free throw shooter,” Miller said about her final free throws. She noted that Tampa “came out hitting in the second half. We played good defense, but they seemed to find shooting touch there in the second half.”
Ouachita (23-8) led by as many as 24 points early in the second half, but Tampa (26-6) rallied and made the final minutes interesting as Ouachita held on for the victory.
Gabby Coleman paced the Lady Tigers with 15 points, while Angela Colliver and Miller each had 14 and A’Laeshia Adams finished with 13.
Ouachita’s victory over Tampa followed the previous night’s win in the Lady Tigers’ first-ever NCAA Division II South Region game. The Lady Tigers, seeded No. 7 in the tournament, stunned No. 2 seed Fort Valley State, 69-55, during the opening round.
