“Conserving Energy Makes a World of Difference”
The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. Psalm 24:1
Through our environmental stewardship efforts, we strive to become a community of faculty, staff and students who understand that human life depends on a healthy and sustainable environment, who seek to enjoy and develop creation in a way that is pleasing to God, and who desire to educate members of our own community, as well as communities with which we connect, to become wise stewards of creation.
We accept as a guiding principle that the Lord has dominion over the earth and all that is in it (Psalm 24:1) and He has entrusted its care to us (Genesis 2:15).
To encourage faculty, staff, and students to care for God’s creation and Ouachita Baptist University’s resources by providing leadership and accountability for energy conservation, energy efficiency, and campus recycling.
Ouachita Baptist University is involved in environmental stewardship because we should be, and are, concerned about protecting our world. As a Christian institution we are obligated to be good stewards of God’s creation and the resources He has given us. All of us in the Ouachita community should be interested because it is simply the right thing to do. Calvin DeWitt summarizes our obligation for creation care in his book “Earth-Wise”.
Our ultimate purpose is to honor God as Creator in such a way that Christian environmental stewardship is part and parcel of everything we do. Our goal is to make tending the garden of creation, in all its aspects, an unquestioned and all-pervasive part of our service to each other, to our community, to God’s world.
The fact that we are a community of over 1,800 students, faculty and staff magnifies this obligation to honor God in this way far beyond that of an individual or a family.
What is Ouachita doing?
In September 2008, the Ouachtia Board of Trustees enacted an Environmental Stewardship Policy to formalize what we believe to be our responsibility toward protecting and caring for God’s creation. Our efforts are concentrated in four areas: energy conservation, energy efficiency, fuel conservation and recycling. The links at left will give you a snapshot of our activities in each of these areas or a list of the projects currently in progress or under consideration is available here.
Ouachita would also like to assist families of our faculty, staff, students, alumni or in the local community who are interested in environmental stewardship. We have made available a tool to help families track energy savings in their homes. Click the MyGreenQuest link below to get started. You’ll need to provide some basic information to establish a user account, then start saving!
