We live in a community that is spiritually hungry as well as physically, so it was so neat to be a part of fulfilling both of those needs as we prayed with people who were crying as they received the food. It opened my eyes to the needs of the people of Arkadelphia and showed me that I can make a difference.
I love visiting with my elder to hear her stories and life journeys. She has become like a second grandmother to me, and I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to have met her if it hadn’t been for ElderServe. She has been a blessing in my life, and seeing the smile on her face when I visit makes me appreciate my opportunity to serve and make others happy.
Motivation is a big factor and many lack motivation because they find the work difficult, they don’t have anyone to help them at home, they don’t have anyone giving their undivided attention. So when our college students have come in to work with them, their motivation has skyrocketed. They want to get that work done. They look forward each week when the tutor comes back and they ask their teacher over and over again ‘when is he coming?’ or ‘when is she coming?’.
The kids that I tutored didn’t get a lot of time at home with their parents helping them, or with their siblings helping them, so I think our one on one time really helped them. I got to be a stable thing in their life and I think it really mattered to them.
