The library’s Archives and Special Collections section maintains a print Vertical File as a quick reference but significant resource for a wide variety of topics pertaining to Clark County history. By including biographical and family history files as well as subject and place files, the Vertical File offers easy access to newsclippings and compiled family histories in addition to information on specific individuals, topics, and communities.
The Vertical Files (also called Subject Files) have been compiled over the course of several decades. The collection began as a catch-all for items having valuable information or other important content, not associated with other specific manuscript collections. However, intentional newsclipping collecting efforts by Clark County historians Velma Seale and the late Allen Syler greatly increased the number and significance of the files during the past twenty years.
