Dr. Hewell joined the faculty in 2001 after eight years on the staff of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention. Prior to his service with that organization, he was full-time music minister and worship pastor for thirteen years.
Dr. Hewell holds degrees from San Francisco Theological Seminary (D.Min.), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.C.M.), and Midwestern State University (B.M.E.).
His first book is Worship Beyond Nationalism: Practicing the Reign of God (Wipf & Stock, 2012). His research and writing interests are primarily focused on the faithfulness of the church’s worship and witness in the world. He is also a long-time contributor to various periodicals, with more than eighty articles and book reviews in publication.
His primary teaching responsibilities include Theology of Worship, The Worshiping Church, Congregational Song, Worship and Witness, Survey of the Bible, and various other music and ministry courses.
Dr. Hewell is also a Resident Fellow and Professor of Worship at B.H. Carroll Theological Institute, Arlington, Texas.
