At Ouachita, we are provided with the unique experience of really connecting with the faculty in arenas outside of the classroom. I experienced this first hand my freshman year, when Dr. Trey Berry, a history professor, invited me to participate in a documentary he was creating.

Dr. Berry took me, and a few fellow classmates to Natchez, Mississippi, to film the final scenes of the documentary. I even had the privilege of being present when Dr. Berry discovered original 19th century documents he thought had been lost forever. I have never seen a professor so excited about his work. Dr. Berry received an Emmy award for the documentary, and I was able to be apart of a once in a lifetime experience.

Dr. Berry did more than just teach me; he let me learn with him. He gave me a chance to be on the cutting edge of historical research … a chance to experience part of history that I couldn’t find in my textbook.
