Dr. Margarett Garrett

Soprano

Assistant Professor of Music

Dr. Garrett holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Voice Performance from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS), a Master of Music degree in Voice Performance from Indiana University-Bloomington, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance from the North Carolina School of the Arts. Her teachers have included Mozelle Clark Sherman, Patricia Stiles, and Marilyn Taylor.


Dr. Garrett has taught studio voice at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Boyce College, and Lindsey Wilson College. Other teaching credits include the Southern Seminary Academy of Music (Louisville, KY), Flying Hands School of Music (Louisville, KY), Community School of the Arts (Charlotte, NC), Grace Covenant School of the Arts (Cornelius, NC), and a home-based voice studio (Huntersville, NC). Her students have earned awards at NATS auditions, pageants, and vocal programs administered through the public schools, in addition to being granted numerous college scholarships. Several of her students have performed lead roles in high school musicals including CinderellaLittle Shop of HorrorsGuys and DollsHonk!,  and Fame.

An active performer, Dr. Garrett has performed as an oratorio soloist in Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Fauré’s Requiem, Haydn’s Creation, Brahms’ German Requiem, Bach’s Magnificat, Vivaldi’s Gloria, and Vaughan Williams’ Pilgrim’s Progress. As an orchestral soloist she has performed Mozart’s Exsultate, jubilate, Glière’s Concerto for Coloratura Soprano and Orchestra, and Ligeti's Mysteries of the Macabre. Her opera credits include the title role in Little Red Riding Hood, Mabel in Pirates Of Penzance, Sandrina in La Finta Giardiniera, Laurie in The Tender Land, and Worldly Spirit in The Obligation of the First Commandment. She is an active performer of recitals at local colleges and universities and has performed with the Kentucky Opera, Piedmont Opera, Opera Carolina, and the Indiana University Opera Theater. In 2008 she made her radio recital debut on WUOL (Louisville, KY). Dr. Garrett is an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). In 2008 she had the privilege of presenting a poster paper based on her dissertation, A Director’s Guide for Staging the Song Cycle “Songs of Fields and Prairies” by Jocelyn Hagen, at the NATS National Convention, where she also worked with international opera star Dawn Upshaw. She was the 2006 Kentucky NATSAA winner and regional runner-up. In addition, she received a Young Leaders Award from NATS that same year.

 
A recipient of many awards and scholarships, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary awarded Dr. Garrett a Performer’s Certificate in 2007 and the Jay W. Wilkey Vocal Artist of the Year award in 2006. As a doctoral candidate, she served as a graduate assistant for church music drama, choral conducting, and vocal pedagogy. She is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society.


Dr. Garrett resides in Arkadelphia, AR, with her husband, Mark, who uses his skills as a web developer to support his wife’s singing habit.
