Types of Tutoring

What style of tutoring fits you best?

Group Appointments

What is small group tutoring?

Group appointments are weekly 50-minute sessions with a trained peer tutor. Groups can include anywhere from two to eight students. All participants in a group must be enrolled in the same course. This type of tutoring is similar to a study session and is primarily for students who prefer reviewing concepts slowly and/or explained in different ways.

This type of tutoring works best for students who:

  • Study more efficiently with others
  • Can talk through concepts to gain a better understanding
  • Are working on group projects and require guidance or assistance
  • Find that studying with friends/peers boosts confidence

If this sounds like you, then fill out a Tutor Request Form and return it to the Student Success Center.

How to Get Started

Students who are interested in group tutoring can join and or request a group at any time during the semester by filling out a Tutor Request Form. Although every effort will be made to place you in a section that fits your preferred times, you may need to alter your schedule to accommodate the available tutoring sessions.

Absence/Cancellation Policy

Please be sure to cancel sessions 24 hours in advance.  If you cancel a session less than 24 hours in advance or fail to show up for a session, it will be counted as an absence. After two absences, you will be blocked from creating additional appointment sessions. You will need to meet face-to-face with the Student Success Coordinator in order to remove the block. Please schedule sessions responsibly.

Your Responsibilities

  • Arrive on time and ready to work
  • Contact the Center 24 hours in advance if you need to miss an appointment.
  • Attempt all homework ahead of time.
  • Come with questions prepared.
  • Attend class regularly and take detailed notes.

One-on-One Appointments

What is one-on-one tutoring?

Appointments are 50-minute sessions with a trained peer tutor. Together, you and your tutor focus on your specific concerns for the specified course. This type of tutoring is designed for students who are struggling or behind in a course and need one-on-one academic attention.

This type of tutoring works best for students who:

  • Need significant help in grasping course content
  • Require individual instructions tailored to the student’s pace and ability
  • Responds better to customized sessions accommodating the student’s needs

If this sounds like you, then fill out a Tutor Request Form and return it to the Student Success Center.

Walk-In Tutoring Labs

What is Walk-in Lab Tutoring?

Walk-in lab tutoring is designed for students who have quick questions about their homework; are having difficulty understanding a concept; or need tutoring on an irregular basis.

Walk-in labs are open to all undergraduates. No appointment is required; just show up! Each walk-in lab is facilitated by peer tutors. The Meet our Tutor section of this website provides information on which courses each of our tutors has taken, which makes it easier for you to decide which lab to visit. The CORE walk-in is mainly focused on students who are having difficulty in any of their CORE courses. There are also other walk-in labs on campus and are included in the Additional Tutoring on Campus section.
