Why I enjoy tutoring my peers: I enjoy tutoring my peers because I am given an opportunity to help someone. To hopefully give them hope to not give up on a class, and that it is ok to ask for help. I too have been in that situation before, where I was afraid to ask someone for help, and what could have been an easy fix, I ended up paying for it. I just like to help others in general though.

Paige Onyuru Sophomore
Major: Biology, Chemistry
Why I enjoy tutoring my peers: Tutoring other students not only allows me to expand my own knowledge in a particular subject, but also provides me with challenges not seen in an everyday setting. Knowing that everyone has different learning styles and speeds, I realize that I, the tutor, must find a way for students to derive an answer that is correct while understanding the process behind it. A correct answer is not always the right answer if a student does not understand “why.” Finding an answer that makes sense to the student challenges my problem solving skills and allows the student to see the materials from a perspective that is most comfortable for them. At the end of the day, tutoring benefits both the student and the tutor.

Why I enjoy tutoring my peers: One of Ouachita’s famous mottos, “Students Serving Students”, rings true to my heart and belief in serving others with Christ’s joy and love. The need for that extra help in understanding complex material to further students’ academic success is increasing. Tutoring my peers allows me to assist and love them in a tangible and practical way. I love learning about God’s creativity in designing all the biological and chemical mechanisms necessary for life. Hopefully through tutoring my friends, I can impart not only the information, but also the passion and wonder of God’s creation with joy and love.
