Society of Physics Students
Sigma Pi Sigma, the only national physics honor society, was founded as a local honor
organization at Davidson College, North Carolina in 1921. Soon chapters were installed at
Duke Univeristy and the Pennsylvania State Univeristy. In 1968 Sigma Pi Sigma joined with
the AIP student sections to form the Society of Physics Students (SPS). It continues to
operate as a fully recognized honor society within the SPS, a unique arrangement in
student organizations.
The society is now national in scope, with over 250 active chapters distributed among
the colleges and universites across the country, including many of the leading
institutions. The total membership is more than 40,000 of whom about 2,500 are members of
the active chapters and the remaining are alumni members.
The Ouachita chapter of SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma is a joint chapter with Henderson State
Univeristy, also in Arkadelphia. This unique relationship offers students the chance to
interact with other students in a different instituion and share academically. The OBU-HSU
chapter sponsors a physics department tea weekly, with an associated lecture conducted by
one of the professors. SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma also sponsors a cookout once a semester for
physics students at the institutions.
Glen Good is the current faculty advisor for
SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma.
