Ouachita Memories: Best memories are all the people I got to know on the team. Roadtrips were always something else. After spending 4-6 hours in a van with with characters which all made Dennis Rodman seem normal, there was no wonder that I sometimes tried to escape into our opponents team van.
*Being taken for a famous Russian ballet dancer by a lady at a restaurant my first day in the States when going to eat with coach. I don’t blame coach for looking at me sceptically, thinking: Has there really been such a big misunderstanding that I recruited a ballet dancer instead of a Swedish tennis player??
*Entering a mall with Larry Don Hurta; suddenly I would hear someone yell out to the whole mall: UNGH IS IN THE HOUSE!
*Coach making me square dance at a restaurant in Oklahoma
*Coach breaking His promise to square dance at the same restaurant
*Coach square dancing at another restaurant one year later (Thanks Moose!)
*A German yelling out every 5-10 minutes: “What’s WRONG with the guy!!”, “YEEEEAAHH”, “Have you EVER seen Anything like it”, “No, no, YOOUU don’t understand!”. I KNOW that no one understands the degree of brainwash this person exposed his surrounding with. These comments still echoes in my head.
*Daniel’s phone conversations – especially some on-campus calls…
*Crille impressing black Wendy’s girls across the road from our hotel room in Mississippi by flexing his muscles in front of the mirror. 5 seconds later they called our hotel room asking Crille to come over and grab something to eat….
Other unforgettable memories/moments: poker nights in Anthony, the story with an orange back-pack (which happened to be mine), me once finishing a point with a winner volley, Jonathan Martin going lose with the axe, Pickett getting attacked by noodles, a Plymouth Voyager –88 (I feel partly responsible for the environmental problems in the U.S), Johan failing the driver licence written exam – underestimating the importance of not having a bad history with the exam coordinator, Thanksgiving –97 in New Orleans, our biggest tennis supporter – Ken Miles, vomit express back from Spring break in Florida, coach’s passion for donuts, Johan & Martin getting up 3 pm. about every Suday, Moose singing Louis Armstrong’s “What a wonderful world” at the piano bar in Hot Springs with a plastic microphone, sunflower seeds, Larry yelling in his sleep that I should quit fencing him, Martin's imitation skills, Pat’s passion for cats, certain players always getting car sick when Coach taking out the turns (right Moose and Raul?), a famous curve on the way back from Hot Springs, suing a freight company, Club Odyssey, Olive Garden, a famous statement: “Don’t try to hide back there!”, Moose's obsession for Tiger Tunes. The list just goes on. It was an incredible time.
