Ouachita Baptist University

Ouachita’s student media staffs provide a perfect setting for students to hone their skills while producing work seen by the campus community, the Arkadelphia community and, through the Web, the world. Any Ouachita student may join a staff by simply volunteering, but mass communications majors are required to practice their skills on at least two staffs during their junior and senior years. Many majors join a staff as a freshman and rise to assistant editor, editor and/or director positions. A limited number of paid work-study positions are available on each staff.

The Signal & Online Signal

The Signal is a weekly student publication that strives to inform and entertain the student body. The staff reports on current events on campus, topics important to students and opinions held by students and staff.  Each issue includes artwork, photography and graphics pertaining to the stories.  The main goal is to serve the students, faculty and staff with an accurate display of the news, opinions, entertainment and sports within Ouachita’s bubble.  The online Signal provides interactive news and features from across campus.  Stories, videos, slideshows and podcasts are some of the features you’ll find at www.obusignal.com.  The Signal has won the Gold Medalist Rating from Columbia Scholastic Press Association and the online Signal received the prestigous Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press.

Video Production

Ouachita students have the oppportunity to assist in video productions.  Their responsibilities range from producer and director to camera operator and editor.  Students enrolled in Practicum also receive academic credit for their service.  Some of the productions include “Ouachita,” a monthly cable program that can be seen throughout the region; a weekly football coach’s show for Arkadelphia High School; Ouachita athletic events; and Tiger Tunes, a cross-campus musical production. The Ouachitonian, the yearbook of Ouachita Baptist University, has served the students, faculty and staff of OBU for the past century.  The book is created and produced entirely by students with faculty advisement and is distributed to the Ouachita community in late September at no charge.  The purpose ofThe Ouachitonian is to produce a quality yearbook that combines photography and writing to effectively capture the uniqueness of each year.  Through their hard work, this publication has won numerous state and national awards, including the gold Crown and Gold Medalist Rating from Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

Photography Lab

The Photography Lab provides photos to the Ouachitonian, Signal and other campus publications by digitally recording the history of each year.  It is a student-run office, which provides for a fun learning environment.  Student photographers have won numerous awards from Arkansas College Media and Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
