W. H. Halliburton
was born June 16, 1887, at Reydel, Arkansas, to John and Betty
Halliburton. He moved to Arkadelphia in 1904 where he attended Ouachita
Academy and Ouachita Baptist College. He developed close ties with the
institution and in 1954, the official yearbook, the Ouachitonian,
was dedicated to him.
Halliburton became a journalist, but was most
noted for his sports coverage of events at Ouachita Baptist University
and Henderson State University. From 1920-1943 he served as editor of
the Daily Siftings Herald, he then joined the staff of the
Southern Standard. He also was a correspondent for the Memphis
Commercial Appeal, Arkansas Gazette, and Arkansas Democrat.
In addition to the many awards he received as a journalist, Ouachita
Baptist University and Henderson State University both honored him for
his expert coverage of each university’s sporting events.
The
Halliburton Collection measures approximately three linear feet and
includes two scrapbooks that contain many of the articles that
Halliburton wrote, over 600 photographs of Clark County subjects, and
numerous articles about various topics, including biographies, the
Ouachita River, railroads, natural beauty of Arkansas, Ouachita Baptist
University, sports events, and local people.
