The two Methodist Churches in Amity (Clark County),
Arkansas, merged in 1940, and the Methodist Episcopal Church South’s
building was sold to the First Christian Church. The structure was left
in disarray and in poor condition. Later, Armin T. Dressel purchased the
property. In the winter of 1966-67, the building was torn down.
The cornerstone of the Methodist Episcopal Church South was opened on
March 15, 1978. In the top of the stone, a hole was cut and a flat
sandstone lid fit into the top of the vault. The heavy oak sills of the
building rested on the cornerstone which covered the vault. Water,
insects, and age destroyed portions of the materials inside the
cornerstone. This collection, donated by Armin Dressel, includes the
cornerstone’s contents.
