Emphasis

Teach
If you have a desire to coach and teach physical education then this emphasis is for you! A Major in Kinesiology and Leisure Studies with an emphasis in Teaching Physical Education, Wellness, and Leisure requires the completion of the University Core (55 hours) and a set of courses offered by the Department of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies (39 hours), and the Department of Education (36 hours).  A student who successfully completes this emphasis will obtain a secondary teaching and coaching endorsement from the state of Arkansas.  

 

Fitness
If you love working with individuals to improve their “quality of life” then this is the emphasis for you! A Major in Kinesiology and Leisure Studies with an emphasis in Fitness requires the completion of the University Core (55 hours) and a set of courses offered by the Department of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies (39 hours). A student selecting the Fitness emphasis will be required to also select a minor or another major of their choosing.  Popular minors include Dietetics, Business Administration, Sociology and Communication.   Students selecting this emphasis are interested in pursuing a vocation in Personal Training, Strength and Conditioning, Corporate Fitness and vocations dealing with physical fitness.

 

Recreation
If you love the outdoors this is the emphasis for you! A Major in Kinesiology and Leisure Studies with an emphasis in Recreation completion of the University Core (55 hours) and a set of courses offered by the Department of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies (37 hours).  A student selecting the Recreation emphasis will be required to also select a minor or another major of their choosing.  Popular minors include Dietetics, Business Administration, Sociology and Communication.  Students selecting this emphasis are interested in pursuing a vocation in Parks and Recreation, Outdoor Recreation, National Park Service, Game and Fish, working with the disabled, and/or recreation camps.

 

Recreation and Sports Ministry
This interdisciplinary emphasis, designed to prepare graduates for camp, sport, outdoor, and church related ministries.  No minor is required for a Recreation and Sports Ministry emphasis. A major in Kinesiology and Leisure Studies with an emphasis in Recreation and Sport Ministry requires the completion of the University CORE (55 hours) and a set of courses offered by the Department of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies (34 hours), the Pruet School of Christian Studies (24 hours), and the Rogers Department of Communication (3 hours).

 

Pre-Professional
This interdisciplinary emphasis, designed to prepare graduates for entry into graduate and/or professional programs in the areas of athletic training, exercise science, physical/occupational therapy, or other related fields, does not require a minor.  Students who are interested in pursuing professional degrees after attending Ouachita should plan carefully and consult with potential professional schools concerning their requirements. A Major in Kinesiology and Leisure Studies with an emphasis in Pre-Professional Studies requires the completion of the University Core (55 hours) and a set of courses offered by the Department of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies (33 hours), the Department of Biological Sciences (18 hours), and the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition (3 hours).
