Thank you for your interest in the Department of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies at Ouachita Baptist University. A question we get ask all the time, “What is Kinesiology and Leisure Studies?” A very simple answer is, “We teach our students about health, physical education, wellness, and recreation.”
Now about our department. A department is only as strong as its faculty. At OBU we have a group of instructors who are exciting, enthusiastic, empathetic, and experienced in the fields of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies. What a combination! Not only that, our faculty is dedicated to developing the minds and bodies of men and women in preparing them to become servant leaders.
Within our department, we use the phrase “moving forward in all directions“ when describing our emphases and course offerings. You will find five (5) emphases. They are:
- Recrestion and Sport Ministry
If you have a desire to: teach/coach, work as a church recreation minister, become a personal trainer, run your own camp, work for the National Park Service, or pursue a career in a health related field (Athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, etc.) one of these emphases is for you. More detail on each emphasis is included.
Once you’ve decided on an emphasis, then our faculty will prepare you to L.E.A.D.
L stands for LEARN. Students in the Department of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies participate in an abundance of in class and out of class learning opportunities.
E refers to EXPERIENCE. Experiential Education is an essential component of our courses. We believe students should “get out of the classroom and learn by doing.”
A means APPLICATION: Our students will be afforded the opportunity to apply what they have learned to real life experiences.
D stands for DISCIPLE. The culminating experience for our students is to teach others.
OBU is an institution that truly seeks to exhibit “Love of God and Love of Learning”. You will be supported and challenged to grow personally and professionally. The faculty and staff of the Department of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies are dedicated to assisting you to become excellent in whichever emphasis you choose. You will discover your own gifts and how to assist others as you progress through your program of study
