Prospective Students

University of Edinburgh

Edinburgh, Scotland

The Program:

The Daniel R. Grant Center for International Programs, in cooperation with the Pruet School of Christian Studies, offers a semester of study abroad at the Faculty of Divinity of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.  This program is specifically designed for those students who major in Christian Studies.  See www.international.ed.ac.uk

Students have the opportunity to earn 12 hours of credit.  The majority of these hours will be earned in Biblical Studies and Theology, but an additional course in another area may be taken for credit.  Students may have the opportunity to take classes in New Testament, Old Testament, Theology, Ecclesiastical History, Practical Theology, and the Study of Christianity in the Non-Western World.  Some courses may be taken in place of required courses at OBU.

In addition to the academic program, students may have the opportunity to experience Scottish life by residing with a Scottish family during the term.  If it is not possible to live with a Scottish family, students will be assigned to university housing.  As well, the student who is selected to study and live in Edinburgh may have the opportunity to experience supervised ministry at a local Scottish Baptist Church.

The Setting:

Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city, is one of the most beautiful cities in all of Europe, and presents a cross section of ancient Scottish culture and modern cosmopolitan society.  From the historic Edinburgh Castle one can view the busy shoppers all along Princess Street, giving the spectator a sense of old and new Scotland.

Edinburgh prides itself on a extremely diverse population of peoples from all over the world, and a rich cultural and artistic heritage.  Each year the city plays host to internationally renowned events such as the Edinburgh International Arts, Fringe, Film, TV and Science Festivals.  Edinburgh also provides a perfect getaway to other cities and popular destinations in Scotland, the rest of Great Britain, and Continental Europe.

The University of Edinburgh, founded over 400 years ago, is one of the most respected universities in the world.  New College, the home of the Faculty of Divinity, has a prominent international, ecumenical, and religiously diverse character, giving students the opportunity to learn and dialogue with people from other countries, other Christian denominations, and other world religions.  The faculty staff consists of internationally recognised scholars, and New College has a strong history of graduating some of the most well known biblical and theological scholars.
