On a student (F-1) visa, there are only two avenues for employment. Upon arrival, any of our F-1 international students are allowed to work on campus. Students interested in working on campus can go to the Student Financial Services office first and get a list of institutional jobs on campus, and then go around to those departments see if there are any openings. Once there is an opening, the student should talk to the person hiring to see if that person will hire them. After that we will help the department and the student obtain a social security number from the social security office.
International students interested in working off campus will have to wait nine months before being eligible to apply. After the nine month mark, international students are allowed to apply for an Economic Hardship work permit if financially eligible. Typically the USCIS will grant work authorization based on economic hardship in rare or extreme circumstances. Students can receive more information about this program through the International Programs Office.
