Scholarships
Each year the Honors Council awards several scholarships and study grants for students pursuing directed studies and research on their honors thesis. These awards enable these students to travel in the United States or to study abroad to conduct their research. Study grants allow students to purchase books, journals or other research materials that can help in their directed studies. The scholarships are usually awarded to students during the spring of their junior year.
These scholarships include the following in three ranges of amounts:
The Ben Elrod Scholarship – up to $2,500
The Honors Council Scholarship – up to $1,000
The Carl Goodson Scholarship – up to $500 To fund research for the senior thesis, juniors should all use the Ben Elrod Scholarship form, available on-line under the link "Download Forms," as the Honors Council aims to support as many students with as much money as possible.
The Ben Elrod Scholarship
Application Deadline: February 5, 2008
The Ben Elrod
Scholarship shall be awarded annually to an outstanding junior
participant in the Carl Goodson Honors Program. The Honors
Council shall choose as recipient of the Scholarship a student
who, in their estimation, is the outstanding junior
participant in the Honors Program.
The Ben Elrod Scholarship will consist of a $2500 study
grant for academic enrichment to be used during the summer
before the recipient's final academic year. It is understood
that this grant is not to be used for study in residence at
Ouachita, but is designed to afford the recipient with the
opportunity to pursue studies overseas or at another American
center of higher education. Should the recipient of the Ben
Elrod Scholarship not have other scholarships sufficient to
cover room, tuition, and fees, the Honors Council, at its
discretion, may supplement the Ben Elrod Scholarship with
funds up to this amount, in addition to the $2500 study grant.
Selection of the Ben Elrod Scholar shall be contingent upon
the strength of the applicant's academic enrichment proposal,
quality of participation within the Honors Program, and other
criteria deemed relevant by the Honors Council. Financial need
should not be the primary selection factor, although it may be
used as a final determining factor if found appropriate.
Honors Council Scholarship
Application Deadline: February 5, 2008
If funding is
available and if the Honors Council chooses, it is empowered
to designate an Honors Council Scholar for the academic year.
This award will go to another junior participant in the
program who will meet the same requirements demanded of the
Ben Elrod Scholar. The Honors Council Scholar will receive a
scholarship of up to $1,000, to be applied toward room,
tuition, and fees. Should the recipient already have
scholarships to provide for these costs, the Honors Council
may award the student a grant equal to this amount to be used
to attend professional meetings, pursue appropriate research,
or provide academic enrichment. This scholarship will be
awarded under the same circumstances as the Ben Elrod
Scholarship.
The Carl Goodson Scholarship
Application Deadline: February 5, 2008
Funding
is available for an additional study grant to be used during
the summer before the recipient's final academic year provided by Dr. and Mrs. Carl Goodson. This grant is intended
to fund recipient's study programs of a smaller nature. This
grant may range up to $500, based on the recipient's plan of
study.
