Volunteer Opportunities:

(all of the programs below may count for TranServe )

ANIMALS:

  • Humane Society of Clark County needs volunteers for any of the below activities (can be done any time/day of the week):
    • take animals to the vet for treatment or to the newspaper for pictures,
    • play with animals and give them individualized attention and exercise,
    • clean pens and feed animals,
    • take animals to visit nursing homes,
    • pick up and deliver food donations,
    • take phone messages,
    • help with fund raisers and booths at fairs.
    • go to PetSmart every third Saturday to help adopt out dogs. You can go for a couple of hours or all day
    • design flyers and posters advertising adoptable animals and upcoming activities

ARTS:

  • Arkadelphia Little Theater provides volunteer opportunities in all forms of play production whether it be acting, directing, technical work, carpentry, painting, gathering props, working backstage, handling tickets, or handling publicity. The group has monthly meetings. For more information, call Bob Shuff, president, at 246-8873, or Mary Jo Mann, secretary, at 246-6250.
  • Human Development Center: Needs volunteers for the craft room. Volunteers can help cut wood crafts using a jigsaw as well as paint them and do detail work. The craft room is open for volunteers to gather together on Tuesdays from 2:30-8:00 pm (come as often or as little as you want for the whole time or just for a few hours), and dinner is provided for you. CHILDREN:

  • The Community Family Enrichment Center  needs help with after school tutoring, holiday events, and someone to assist with parenting classes. Other opportunities are available - stop by the center to chat or contact Pat Donlow at 246-5675 or 246-1147.
  • HeadStart:  Needs Spanish-speaking volunteers to act as teachers' aids.  Lynn Johnson, 246-8931
  • MOPS (mothers of pre-schoolers) needs child care workers during their MOPS programs. The hours are from 9 am to noon every other Friday. Even if you can only work an hour, that is fine. Contact Leigh Anne McKinney at mckennyl@obu.edu.

CITY GOVERNMENT:

  • Chamber of Commerce needs someone to volunteer 2 hours a week or any time if possible.  Would be filling packets, filing, office work, etc.  Blaine Smith, 246-5542

EDUCATION/TUTORING:

  • Clark County Adult Education needs volunteers to assist students individually, and to help senior adults, special needs students and at-risk youth. Classes are conducted at night, as well as during regular school hours. The only qualifications for helpers are the abilities to read and do basic math. Call 246-1104 for information.
  • Park Hill tutoring ministry. Tutor children on Tuesday afternoons from 3-5 at Park Hill Baptist Church, 333 Hollywood Rd. Call the church office at 246-4802 or Elizabeth Sharp at 246.7228 for details.
  • America Reads/America Counts:  tutoring in the public schools.  For details contact Jan Bass at 245-5320.
  • The public schools need volunteers to help children with their reading skills and to tutor them after school. Contact Pat Donlow, 246-1148.
  • Arkadelphia Housing Authority is looking for volunteers to help with their tutoring program. Work with boys and girls ages 7-17, helping them with homework or just hanging out with them. Male volunteers are especially needed. You can set a flexible schedule. Contact Jacquelyn Marshall, 230.1052, marshallj@pha.arkadelphia.net

SENIOR ADULTS:

  • Twin River Health and Rehabilitation: Volunteer opportunities are listed below (and can be done at any time/day of the week on a regular basis or as a one-time event). Contact Carolyn Shell at 246.6337 for more information:

  • Hospitality Care Center (1420 Pine Street) needs volunteers interested in any of the following (Volunteers can come any time/any day). Contact Leasa Simpson at 246.4502.
    • playing games
    • crafts/painting nails/bingo
    • cooking classes (there are afternoon and morning classes to help with)
    • sitting and talking to residents
    • helping them to decorate a float for the fair
    • Taking residents to the fair or on outings or to lunch or dinner
    • reading scriptures to residents
    • giving donations of things you don't use (such as beads, flowers, etc) to give away as prizes to residents
  • Central Arkansas Development Council’s Sr. Adult Center.  Contact Charlotte Shepherd or Cindy, 246-9871.
  • Beverly Health Nursing Home needs volunteers for the following tasks:
    • Decorations provided by and put up by volunteers. Beverly will supply 3 Christmas trees to be picked up and decorated after Thanksgiving.
    • Visit residents who don’t have family near by or are lonely.
    • Push hydration cart at 2pm each day.
    • Play games with, sing, and read to the residents.
    • Feed residents and pass meal trays at 7:30am, 12noon, 5pm (volunteer can get free lunch).

  • Meals on Wheels: needs volunteers to share deliveries of meals to homes. Each route takes approximately one hour, and is usually done by a couple, although some individuals do both driving and door delivery. Deliveries are made five days a week, but volunteers are asked to sign up for only one day or more each month. Meals and containers are provided with volunteers using their own transportation. EMERGENCY SERVICES:

  • American Red Cross: insures help when needed through disaster awareness and recovery, preparation and response, health and safety courses, first aid, CPR, and water safety. Pam Palmer 246-2682.
  • Courage House: Offers assistance and advocacy for women and children who have been abused physically, emotionally, verbally, and sexually. Ruth Suggs or Cheryl Allen, 246-3122.
    • Courage House needs help with painting and yard work
    • It can also use trained speakers to provide resources, and useful, educational information on topics including finance, stress, nutrition, parenting, budget, cooking, child motivation and family violence.
    • Children’s activity helpers to provide fun and educational activities for all ages of children. Magic shows, story tellers and arts and crafts are possibilities for programs.
    • Donations of baby furniture or equipment, and clothing, especially for small boys and toddlers are also needed. For large items, please call and make arrangements. 
    • Art or graphic design skills to create publicity materials
    • Clerical work - answer phone calls or help with crisis calls
  • Crisis Pregnancy Center needs volunteers to answer phones and talk with clients. Training will be provided. For more information, contact Michael Pettie at Lighthouse Ministries at 246-9524
  • Food bank.  Need help sorting through food, etc.  Erma Smith, 246-8244.
  • Office of Emergency Services: Jim Burns, 246.8840

MENTALLY/PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED:

  • Human Development Center is a state-supported residential facility for people with developmental disabilities. Volunteers are needed in several capacities. Contact Sharon Mohammed or Kathy Carter at 246-8011 for more information.
    • Help with yard maintenance and mowing. Can be done any day/any time.
    • Volunteers are also needed at the HDC for the craft room. Volunteers can help cut wood crafts as well as paint them. The craft room is open for volunteers to gather together on Tuesdays from 2:30-8:00 pm (come as often or as little as you want for the whole time or just for a few hours), and dinner is provided free of charge for you. In this capacity, you will be only working with other volunteers. You will not be working with residents.
    • Visit with/mentor residents
    • The HDC will also develop a semester-long project around your interests, if you are interested. This can be a more relational project, if desired   
  • Group Living: provides developmentally disabled adults with a working and living environment which enables them to attain the highest level of independent living. Group Living provides jobs for clients in the Beehive and Honeycomb Restaurant. Recognized for its innovation and creativeness in working with its clients. Jane Lucas @ 246-5849. (possible paid positions available as well)

HEALTH:

  • Baptist Medical Center Auxiliary is a volunteer group of men and women who service the local hospital and its patients. Duties include working in the gift shop, giving visitors information, and helping in the surgery waiting room, recovery room and out-patient area. The organization also holds fund-raisers such as jewelry and book sales, and special suppers. New members are always needed. Visitors are welcome at the group’s meetings at 11:30 a.m. on the second Monday of each month in the hospital cafeteria, or volunteers can call Mary Chambers at 246-8594, or the hospital gift shop at 245-1140.
  • HOSPICE: 245-1041 or 1040. Ask for Janice (social worker) or Regina (nurse) 
  • Arthritis Foundation: provides programs of research, education, and patient care. Also provides water activities and exercise classes for arthritis sufferers. Diane Stephenson 800-482-8858. Ollie Allen leads arthritis classes. 870-353-4955.

NATURE:

  • Earth Team is the volunteer branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service which helps people conserve, improve and sustain natural resources and the environment.  Earth Team projects have included tree plantings, computer operations, engineering assistance, conservation education programs, clerical and secretarial assistance, water quality activities and more.  To volunteer, call Rich Joslin, NCRS District Conservationist, 246-9816, Ext. 101.
  • Garvan Woodland Gardens, Hot Springs. Garvan Woodland Gardens is a new botanical gardens in the area and is in need of volunteers. Some job possibilities are:
    • Ticket Takers: Taking tickets at the door and welcoming guests, answering questions.
    • The Pavilion: Sit at a station inside the gardens to answer questions, give directions, and just provide a friendly face. Also sell water bottles when it is hot.
    • Boat dock: Man and secure the docking area for those who have docking privileges. This area also has a great view of the lake and guests like to take it in, so you are there to help watch out for their safety. This is the perfect place to spend a couple of hours volunteering while you read, relax, fish and visit with guests
    • Other positions are also available as needs arise.

SPORTS:

  • Community Family Enrichment Center is looking for volunteers to help with their new Bike Shop. They need organizational help as well as help with running the bike shop and repairing bikes. Contact Pat Donlow or Divetta Steves at 246.5675

YOUTH:

  • Clark County 4-H: provides education programs for youths including individual and group projects, competitive activities, camping, and tours. The 4-H develops leadership, initiative, and character. Barbara Holt 246-2281

MANUAL LABOR:

  • South Arkansas Community Development: a self-help housing program in Arkadelphia needs volunteers to help build homes for low-income families every Saturday. They also need help with office work - filing, etc. Contact Ashley Harris at 230-1717. www.arcommunity.com

  • Lighthouse Ministries needs a person with a truck to help pick up furniture donated to them. This is something they need help with only once in a while, but they just need someone to call when they need help. Call Michael Pettie at  246-9524 for details.

  • The Red River Baptist Association/Lighthouse Ministries needs volunteers to help with various tasks. You can come every day, once a week or whenever you have time. Call Michael Pettie at 246-9524 for details.
    • food distribution to those with lost jobs or financial problems
    • Helping to organize their new Thrift Store.

  • Court Appointed Special Advocates: volunteers who become advocates for abused and neglected children which enter into our court system.  Often times the child, who is the victim, is the one person without someone whose sole purpose is to be there for them. Carla Herron—246-4804
