Opportunities
for Senior Adults
A creative writing seminar for senior
adults is offered every semester for eight weeks. The class is
limited to ten members. It is a starting point for seniors to begin
to reflect on their life experiences and write them down. The class
uses the journal titles, For our Children's Children. There
are several questions at the top of each page that stimulate
thinking and allow the writer to begin to record their memories in
an organized way. Class member Mary King says, " We come together
each week and share pleasant and not so pleasant memories. I feel
that some of our experiences need to be recorded as a textbook about
what to remember for the future."
Sherry Pate, a published author and
writer, is the instructor for the class. Pate says, "Our goals for
the class are to build a sense of community among the group and to
give each of them the tools to begin to reflect on their lives and
write down their memories for future generations. A strong bond of
friendship is formed within the group as each reflects and shares a
bit of their history."
A new class is formed at the beginning
of each semester. For more information, call Judy Duvall, ElderServe
coordinator, at 245.5320.
