Welcome to the Department of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies at Ouachita Baptist University. We pride ourselves in preparing students to L.E.A.D.
L stands for LEARN. The Department of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies offers programs leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts with one of three areas of emphasis: (1) Physical Education Wellness & Leisure, (2) Recreation, and (3) Fitness. Our faculty is dedicated to developing the minds and bodies of men and women in preparing them to become servant leaders in teaching, coaching, community recreation, church and camp recreation, fitness, and other health and sport-related fields.
E refers to EXPERIENCE. Experiential Education is an essential component of our courses. We believe students should “get out of the classroom and learn by doing.” Working side by side with their instructor, our students are exposed to an abundance of out of classroom learning experiences. Examples include assisting with Special Olympics, designing and implementing activities for K-12 physical education classes, and teaching and leading outdoor recreation activities for elementary, secondary, and college students.
AND is used because we want our students to, not only major in Kinesiology and Leisure Studies, but to be an integral part of our great and special university. Our students are immersed into Ouachita and her mission “a Christ-centered learning community. Embracing the liberal arts tradition, the university prepares individuals for ongoing intellectual and spiritual growth, lives of meaningful work, and reasoned engagement with the world.”
D stands for DISCIPLE. The culminating experience for our students is to teach others. Course assignments dealing with experiential education, a field experience placement, or a student teaching internship are all ways our students are able to disciple others and to “grow in wisdom, and stature, and favor with God and man.”
I would welcome a phone call, e-mail, and /or campus visit. I’d love to talk to you about Ouachita and the Department of Kinesiology and Leisure studies.
Sincerely,
Mike Reynolds
