Pre-Nursing Program

General Information

A student who wishes to obtain a B.S. degree in nursing at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences may complete the first two years of work at Ouachita as outlined below. A student who plans to enter any other nursing program should consult the catalog of the appropriate school before registering at Ouachita. Please note that requirements of professional schools change, are posted on their websites, and often take effect immediately. Their requirements supersede OBU catalog listings. All prerequisite course grades must be C or better. A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better is required. Minimum prerequisite is 64 hours.

First Year

• CHEM 1034 (Introductory Organic and Biological Chemistry)
• CORE 1043 (Composition 1)
• CORE 1053 (Composition 2)
• HIST 1003 (World History to 1600) or HIST 1013 (World History Since 1600)
• MATH 1003 (College Algebra)
• PSYC 1013 (General Psychology)
• SOCI 1003 ( Introduction to Sociology)
• SPCM 1003 (Fundamentals of Speech Communication)

First Year's Total = 33 hrs

Second Year

• BIOL 2014 (Human Anatomy and Physiology I)
• BIOL 2024 (Human Anatomy and Physiology II)
• BIOL 3014 (Microbiology)
• DIET 3053 (Nutrition)
• ENGL 3003 (Advanced Composition)¹
• HIST 2003 (US History to 1877) or HIST 2013 (US History Since 1877) or PSCI 2013 (American National Government)
• PHIL 1003 (Introduction to Philosophy) or PHIL 1023 (Logic)
• PSYC 2033 (Human Development)
• Statistics (MATH 2063 or PSYC 2053 or SOCI 3003 or MGMT 2033)
• Electives 1-4 hours

¹ or ENGL 3013 (Technical and Professional Writing) or credit by examination (CLEP or OBU departmental exam). Waived if Aor B made in Composition 1 and A made in Composition 2.

Second Year's Total = 31 hrs
