Ouachita Baptist University will host world-renowned flutist Dr. Tadeu Coelho as guest artist and speaker for a flute seminar on Ouachita’s campus Saturday, March 8. As part of the all-day event, co-sponsored by the Hot Springs Flute Ensemble, Coelho will perform in a recital as well as lead a discussion and masterclass for seminar participants.
“Dr. Coelho is inspiring in his performances and his outlook on life and teaching,” said event organizer Kristin Grant, assistant professor of music at OBU. “He has a beautiful flute sound, brilliant technique and the ability to capture and share expression in music.”
Grant also serves as conductor of the Hot Springs Flute Ensemble. This is the second time she has brought Coelho to campus for this event following his successful visit five years ago.
The public is invited to attend two performances Saturday afternoon. The seminar flute choir will perform at 1 p.m. in Hammons Gallery outside the McBeth Recital Hall, followed by a concert by Coehlo at 1:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall. He will be accompanied on the piano by Dr. Adam Haas, OBU lecturer in music. These events are free and open to the public.
Musicians may also register to participate in the full seminar, beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with a flute choir rehearsal for registered attendees. Following the rehearsal, Coelho will lead a discussion on “Flute as Inspiration and Praise” at 11 a.m. Finishing up the day, flutists will then have the opportunity to play for Coelho and receive critique as part of a masterclass from 3-5 p.m.
Coelho, a native of Brazil, has performed in music halls across the world and recorded multiple solo CDs. He currently teaches at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He previously served as associate professor of flute at the University of Iowa and the University of New Mexico as well as visiting professor at the Ino Mirkovich Music Academy in Croatia. Coelho earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Manhattan School of Music and now works to train the next generation of flutists.
