Getting
into Medical, Dental, Veterinarian
or
Physical Therapy School:
I.
Professional schools are looking for well-rounded
students. You do
not have to major in a science, however most students do.
One of the primary benefits to those seeking acceptance
from OBU is that they have taken the CORE courses.
II.
Study! Good
grades in all your courses are a must.
A slip up here or there in a tough course is not going to
hurt your chances, but more than a few poor grades will be tough
to overcome. A poor grade as a freshman is much easier to overcome than a
poor grade as a senior. Most
professional schools realize that beginning college is a big
adjustment and many students do not perform at their best as
freshmen…..the professional schools look for improvement over
time.
III.
Shadow. Spend
time with a physician or dentist at the office, see what they
actually do. Interviewers
ask about these experiences!
This experience will provide information that you cannot
obtain in the classroom and it may help confirm or even change
your career direction. If
you cannot make arrangements for this with your family health
care provider, see your advisor or one of your professors.
IV.
Prepare for the entrance exam! Do not assume that taking a course in a given area has
prepared you to take the MCAT or DAT.
Prepare yourself for the style of exam and take an extra
course in your weak area(s).
You might even check on one of the exam prep courses,
such as the Kaplan Course.
V.
Behave! You
will need recommendations from your professors and they are
watching. Poor
people skills, consistent tardiness, laziness or a couple of
DWI’s are not going to help you in this area.
Act responsibly. Avoid even the appearance of poor conduct!
