I grew up in
Pine Bluff and graduated from high school in Shreveport,
Louisiana. In all that time, I cannot recall ever thinking,
“Maybe I’ll be a biologist one day.” I had never known a
scientist and didn’t particularly enjoy science in school
(English was always my favorite subject). Then, during my
sophomore year at Baylor University, I became fascinated with
environmental issues, and I realized I’d need to know something
about science to understand those issues. In 1993, I graduated
from Baylor with a B.S. in biology and environmental studies. |

In 1993-94, I served as a Peace
Corps volunteer in Senegal and the Ivory Coast (West Africa),
and then entered an M.S. program in conservation ecology at the
University of Georgia. Afterward, I studied science journalism
at the University of California-Santa Cruz, got married, taught
freshman biology in Atlanta, and edited nature/environmental
books for the University of Georgia Press. For three years,
David and I lived in Gainesville, Florida, where I worked in the
editorial office of a scientific journal (Conservation Biology).
During that time, our daughter Catherine was born.

In 2004, I earned a Ph.D. in
biological sciences from the University of Arkansas, where I
studied old-growth forests in the Cross Timbers region of Texas.
My research interests include conservation biology,
biodiversity, forest ecology, avian ecology, and invasive
species. Spring 2005 was my first semester at OBU, and my
primary teaching responsibilities are microbiology and life
science. |
