I
am a native of Star City, Arkansas and graduated from Ouachita
with a B.S. in Biology in 1984.
I completed both a M.S. (’86) and Ph.D. (’89) at the
University of Texas at Dallas in Environmental Sciences –
Aquatic Toxicology. In
August, 1989 I returned to Ouachita as an instructor in the
Biology Department. I
became the Biology Department Chair in 1994.
I am married (Tracey) and have two children, Ashley and
Caleb.
In
addition to my responsibilities as Chair of the Department, I
teach several courses. My
primary responsibility is General Biology – Zoology. Though I have facilitated most of the courses in the
Department at one time or another, I currently teach the Medical
Terminology course and Investigative Methods (CORE course).
I am also the Chair of the Health Professions Advisory
Committee.
My
current research interests include the natural history of the
Ouachita River basin and water quality analysis of Lakes DeGray,
Ouachita and Gresson (and their tailwaters).
In the past, I have worked in water quality research for
both the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Arkansas Game and
Fish Commission. We
have banded coots, collected sediment samples for mercury
analysis, and studied the bioaccumulation of mercury in the food
chain in the past 5 years.
I have guided student research projects studying the
effects of Roundup on earthworms, the analysis of coliform
bacteria in the effluent of Rock Plant Filters, and coliform
analysis of samples collected in the marina area of a local
lake.
I
am a current member of the National Academic Advising
Association.
