Robert Hesse is currently Director of Athletic Bands at Ouachita Baptist University. Mr. Hesse’s bands at Ouachita Baptist University have continued the strong tradition that Ouachita’s music department has always maintained. His enthusiasm and musical excitement that he has brought to the OBU program make his ensembles refreshing to see and hear.
He has taught in the public schools in Hope, Springdale, Marion and Arkadelphia, Arkansas. His bands have performed at the Independence Bowl, Sugar Bowl and the Inauguration parade in Washington, D.C. for President Bill Clinton. Additional performances include the Parade of Champions in the Cotton Bowl, Vanderbilt Invitational, Louisiana Tech Invitational, Delta State Marching Festival, Northwest Louisiana Marching Championships, Texas High School Invitational and MBA Grand National Championships. While at Hope High School, Mr Hesse’s band won the coveted Governor’s Cup trophy for first place in the Central Arkansas Marching Championships nine times in eleven years. His Arkadelphia Bands were finalist in the Play It Again Arkansas Invitational Marching Festival and the Arkansas Open Invitational Championships. The AHS Band was awarded Grand Champion of the Siloam Springs Invitational Marching Championships and their marching season was concluded with the Grand Champion Award at the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas in December of 2001.
Mr. Hesse is in great demand as an adjudicator, clinician and drill designer throughout the United States. He has been on the staff with Bowl Games of America for the past 20 years and was part of the instructional staff for National Championship Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl pre-game and half time festivities. Mr. Hesse has also served throughout the United States and Canada as an adjudicator and clinician for Heritage Festivals of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Mr. Hesse was honored as “One of the Top 50 Band Director’s in America Who Make A Difference” by School Band and Orchestra Magazine.
Mr. Hesse has been a member of the Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association where he served as Vice-President, Arkansas Bandmasters Association where he serves as a past president, Phi Beta Mu, Phi Mu Alpha, American School Band Directors Association where he served as President of the Arkansas Chapter, Arkansas Music Educators Association and the Four States’ Bandmasters Association where he is a three time past president. He is an honorary member of Tau Beta Sigma and is the Ouachita Campus sponsor of Kappa Kappa Psi. Both of these are service organizations. Most recently, Mr. Hesse has been elected as a member of the Society of Pi Kappa Lamda.
