Lady tennis team wins out five weekend openers

The Lady Tiger tennis team opened its 2001 season with a bang over the weekend by winning five Gulf South Conference home matches including an upset of Delta State University.
With five freshmen on her six person roster, Lady Tiger tennis coach Betsy Danner saw her team win a 5-4 match against Delta State, ranked 15th in the nation in NCAA Division II.
Also in action on Friday, Ouachita slammed the door 9-0 on Southern Arkansas University. Several matches on Saturday were stopped or shortened because of rain, but Ouachita had three wins for the day including a 5-3 decision over the University of Central Arkansas.
In singles against Delta, Ouachita's Barbara van der Gugten won, 6-1,6-0. Brenda Magnetti lost, 6-1, 6-3. Ouachita's only upperclassman, Sylvia Sieval won, 6-2, 6-1. Ouachita's Sabrina Benitez won 6-Z 6-0. Ashleigh Raine won her number five singles set, 6-3,6-3. Casey Danner took a loss, 6-0, 7-5. In doubles against Delta, Magnetti/Sieval were defeated, 8-4. Van der Gugten and Benitez were winners, 8-3. Raine/Danner fell, 8-0.
The SAU Riderettes proved no match for the Lady Tigers on Friday with only four points going to the Magnolia team. Against SAU in number one singles, van der Gugten won 6.06,60 Sieval won 6-0,6-0. Benitez won, 6-0,6-0 Raine scored a win 6-1 6-0. Magnetti found an easy win 6-0,6-0. Danner claimed a 6-1, 6-0 decision. In doubles, van der Gugten/Bemtez won 8-0. Sieval and Magnetti also put up a sound victory, 8-0. Raine and Danner also won, 8-2.
Saturday's inclement weather caused some matches to be delayed. Before the delays, Ouachita defeated UCA. Van der Gugten won, 6-1, 6-1. A 6-3, 6-2 decision was given to Benitez. Raine took a hard win, 6-4, 6-2. Danner, however, lost, 6-0,6-1. In doubles against the Sugar Bears, van der Gugten / Benitez again gave a sound victory, 80. Magnetti / Sieval were winners, 8-1. However, the team of Raine and Danner took a hard fought loss, 9-8.
Ouachita worked around thunderstorms in winning five sets and the match against ATU. Van der Gugten won, 6-0,6-0. A 6-0,6-0, sound victory came from Benitez. All three doubles sets went on, weather not withstanding. Van der Gugten/Benitez gave their last victory of the weekend, 8-1. In an 8-1 decision, Sieval/Magnetti took another win, while Raine and Danner completed the doubles sweep by taking a dose 9-7 decision.
The match with UAM was stopped at because of rain. The Blossoms did not score a point against the Ouachita in the shortened match. Raine and Danner each took a win in singles play. In doubles, the duo of van der Gugten/ Benitez won easily, 8-0. Magnetti/Sieval also took a quick victory, 8-0. The Lady Tigers' number two doubles team of Raine and Danner received a forfeit.
