BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA - The NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference has announced that Robyn Anders, a 5-9 junior guard for the Ouachita Baptist University Lady Tiger basketball team, is among 11 players who have been named to the 2000-2001 Winter Sports All-Academic Team.
The Winter All-Academic Team is selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees met all three of the following qualifications to appear on the ballot: (1) an overall grade point average of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career, (2) a starter or a significant contributor to their squad, and (3) leadership, academic curriculum and community service.
SID and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. Freshmen are not eligible nor is any student who has not spent a full year in residence at the sponsoring GSC member and passed 24 semester hours or 36 quarter-hours toward an identifiable degree program during the year at that GSC member. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.
Anders is a three year starter for coach Garry Crowder's Lady Tigers. She is the first-ever OBU athlete to earn All-Academic accolades in winter sports since Ouachita joined the mega-conference last fall.
Anders helped lead the Lady Tigers (20-8,11-5) to their first GSC Tournament appearance and their first 20-game winning season since the team began competing in intercollegiate competition in 1976. Anders ended the year ranked sixth in assists in the conference with a 3.3 per game average. On her team, she was the top-ranked assists player and averaged more minutes on the floor (33.8) than any other athlete. Anders was second in team scoring, averaging 10.4 points per game. She played in all 28 of the Lady Tigers' games, where she hit 43 percent (101-233) from the field. From behind the arc, Anders was 41 percent (16 of 39); and connected on 67 percent (73-109) from the free throw line. From her two guard spot, scored 291 points and had 90 rebounds.
Earlier this month, league basketball coaches voted her to the 2000-2001 West Division All-GSC Basketball Second Team for her court prowess.
At Ouachita, Anders is a health, physical education and recreation major. She is a 1998 graduate of Southlake Carroll High School in Grapevine, TX. Her parents are Ron and Susan Anders of Grapevine.
Ten other OBU Lady Tigers qualified, with at least a 3.00 grape point average, to be listed on the conference's Winter Academic Honor Roll. Qualification for this particular honor is automatic based on grade point averages and there is no voting requirements.
On the GSC Winter Honor Roll from OBU were: Mary Ann Caldwell, a 6-0 sophomore post form Wynne,; Vivi Dees, a 5-8 junior guard from Cove (Van-Cove)' Tracy Denney, a 5-7 sophomore guard from Sheridan; Stephanie Grimes, a 5-11 freshman forward from Maypearl, TX; Lyndsey Hawkins, a 5-7 freshman guard from Jonesboro (Valley View); Kristen Hurdle, a 6-3 freshman post from Fort Worth, TX (Keller-Fossil Ridge); Shannon Sangster, a 5-9 sophomore guard from Dallas, TX (Newman Smith); Stephanie Sangster, a 5-10 freshman guard from Dallas, TX (Newman Smith); Lindsey Snow, a 6-0 freshman guard from Klein, TX; and Erin Turner, a 5-11 freshman guard from Arkadelphia.
