Ouachita Teams Take Two

by Mac Sisson

ARKADELPHIA-Both Ouachita Baptist University basketball teams won Gulf South Conference games Thursday night with the Tigers defeating the Arkansas Tech University Wonder Boys, 86-71, and the Lady Tigers winning over the ATU
Golden Suns, 72-69, at OBU's Bill Vining Arena in the Roy and Christine Sturgis Physical Education Center.

The win by the Lady Tigers moved the team to a 9-3 overall record and 1-1 in the GSC. The Suns fell to 9-4 and 2-1. The Tigers' record is now 3-9, 1-1, while the Wonder Boys fell to 3-9, 2-1.

The win by the Lady Tigers was keyed by free throw shooting by the home team. Ouachita was 22 of 28 from the field, while Tech was only 5 of 16. Ouachita's Crystal Allen led both teams in scoring hitting 23 points, dishing four assists and stealing the ball three times. Tech's leading scorer, Ginny Shaw was held by the Ouachita defense to only 10 points. The Suns were led in scoring by Angie Harris with 19 points who also picked-up rebounding honors for both clubs in gathering 12 boards.

It was an intense, physical women's game with Tech coming into the contest leading the Gulf South Conference. Coach Joe Foley's team had their hands full with a Ouachita team that kept their focus and marched to a 36-28 halftime margin. In the half, the lead changed hands seven times, with the largest lead by OBU with an eight point margin with 18 seconds remaining in the stanza.

The second half was just as intense as the first. Ouachita held the lead the entire half, but not by much. With 7:46 to play, the Lady Tigers had their apex with a six point lead, 56-50, on a free throw by Allen. Tech tied it 64-64 with 1:35 to play on a two-pointer by Harris.

Ouachita responded to the challenge with a bucket by Jennifer Edwards with 1:16 to play to make it 66-64 and then Allen added two to round the score to 68-64 with 59 ticks left on the clock. Shaw made a three-pointer with 20 seconds to play to heighten the tension with Tech trailing 68-67. A foul on Ouachita's Stephanie Grimes sent the freshman to the line with 15 seconds and she promptly converted both to make it 70-67. Shaw then showed her basketball skills by then filling the net for two more points with three seconds to play to make the score 70-69. The game was then sealed by Grimes with one second to play when she was fouled with one second and went to the line and made both free throws to make the final score of 72-69.

The Golden Suns actually outshot the Lady Tigers from the field in making 53 percent of their shots from the field (31 of 59), while OBU converted 49 percent of their efforts (23 of 47). From the arc, Tech was two of eight for 25 percent, while OBU was four of 11 for 36 percent. While Ouachita was hitting 22 of 28 from the line, Tech was having its problems in shooting only five of 16 for 31 percent. The Suns barely outrebounded OBU, 32-30.

To go along with Allen's 23 points, Edwards had 11 and Tracy Denney added 10. For Tech in addition to Harris' 19, the Suns saw Melanie Mallett score 16, followed by A.J. Thomas with 14, and Shaw's 10.

The enthusiasm for the women's game seemed to carryover to the men's game as the Tigers broke a six game losing streak to take their first Gulf South Conference victory in school history.

All five starters for OBU scored in double numbers, led by senior point guard T.J. Jones with 22 points. Mauricio Watson scored 17, while freshman post Richard Whaley had 11, and Tim Lane and Jarris Kentle responded with 10 each.

Ouachita outrebounded the Wonder Boys, 44-38. The Tigers also outshot the Russellville team in hitting 50 percent (26 of 52) of their attempts. Going into the game, Tech was the leader in the GSC, but in Arkadelphia on Thursday night the Wonder Boys couldn't find the answer to the puzzle and hit a cold 35 percent (26 of 75) from the field.

Coach Mike Reynolds' Tigers also lived at the free throw line where OBU hit 28 of 37 for 76 percent, while Tech went only 12 of 19 for 63 percent.

Tech was led by guard Lartavious Carter with 17 points, followed by Jeremy Johnson with 15 points.

The Tigers were in command for the entire game, never trailing the Wonder Boys. OBU's largest lead was a 16 point advantage, 73-57 on a basket by Jones with 4:32 to play in the game.

Both the Ouachita basketball teams will be on the road Saturday night as they travel to Monticello to face the UA-Monticello Cotton Blossoms (6 p.m.) and the Boll Weevils (8 p.m.) Both GSC games will be aired over KDEL-FM (100.9) Radio in Arkadelphia. Dr. Jeff Root will be handling the broadcast.

On Monday night, the Lady Tigers and Tigers return to Vining Arena for GSC games against the University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears at 6 p.m. and the UCA Bears at 8 p.m.
