Lady Tigers Take Win Over Lane

by Mac Sisson

ARKADELPHIA-Playing their second game in 48 hours, the Ouachita Baptist University Lady Tigers took a little time in getting going but once started the train couldn't be stopped and ended with a 95-49 shellacking of the Lane College Lady Dragons Monday night at the Bill Vining Arena in OBU's Roy and Christine Sturgis Physical Education Center.

The lopsided win by the Tigers (8-3, 0-1) was highlighted by a high percentage in field goal shooting, taking over the boards and few turnovers against Lane (1-9).

The non-conference win stopped a two game OBU losing streak with the last loss a close one on Saturday, 69-61, to the second ranked nationally Delta State University Lady Statesmen in a game in Cleveland, MS.

"We came into the game a little tired after Saturday's game with Delta," said OBU coach Garry Crowder. "It took us a little time to get our second wind before we got cranking. I was proud of the way we came through."

Ouachita junior guard Robyn Anders led all scorers with 15 points, followed by center Kristen Hurdle with 14, Stephanie Grimes with 11, and Tracy McBryde with 10.

Lane College's leading scorer was Michelle Chatman with 15.

Ouachita led at halftime 46-27. The team shot 52 percent (37 0f 71) from the field, while holding the Lady Dragons to 27 percent (17 of 62). The Lady Tigers owned the backboards claiming 53 rebounds to Lane's 36. OBU committed only 10 turnovers.

Crowder used his entire bench with the reliefs scoring 50 of Ouachita's 95 points.

For the starters, Anders continues to gain strength in her statistics. This time she was six of eight from the field and three for three at the line, coupled with five rebounds, and four steals. Hurdle was also six of eight from the field and two of two from the line. Most of the starters played only between 14 to 22 minutes of the game.

The scene changes dramatically on Thursday night when the Arkansas Tech University Golden Suns come to town. The Suns claimed a huge Gulf South Conference win, 77-60, Monday night in Russellville over the number two nationally ranked Delta State University Lady Statesmen. The Suns were led by guard Ginny Moore-Shaw with 33 points. Moore-Shaw played for a year at Ouachita before transferring to Tech.

"We could be looking at the potential national champions coming to our place on Thursday night," said Crowder. "I believe they have every part of the game covered. It will take a tremendous effort on our part to have a chance to defeat them...but, I am confident we can."

Tip-off of the GSC game between the Lady Tigers and the Golden Suns will be at 6 p.m. Thursday night at Bill Vining Arena.
