ARKADELPHIA - The Ouachita Baptist University Lady Tiger basketball team gave their fans great hope for this years season as they dominated their opponents in their season-opener against non-conference rival Jarvis Christian College on Saturday afternoon in Bill Vining Arena of the Roy and Christine Sturgis Physical Education Center.
Senior Jamie Scheppmann of Cove, who transferred from Louisiana Tech University, made her debut as a Lady Tiger and did in in fine style scoring 28 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Scheppmann was named as the Co-Lone Star Conference Preseason Player-of-the-Year.
The Lady Tigers took the momentum from the very start as sophomore guard Robyn Anders of Grapevine, TX (South Lake Carroll) made a three-pointer in their first possession and followed it up with a perimeter jumper in the first minute of play. OBU then went on an impressive offensive run, and led 25-6 after only 11 minutes of play.
OBU went into halftime leading the Hawkins, Texas club, 31-27. Anders again got the team going putting up another three-pointer in the first minutes of the second half. Coach Garry Crowder emptied a very talented OBU bench midway through the second half.
Scheppmann shot six of nine from the field, including three for four from the three-point arc, as well as making 13 of 14 free throw shots. Anders also helped the Lady Tiers as she had 10 points on the game, by shooting four for six from the field including two three-pointers in two attempts. OBU showed their depth with nine out of 11 players scoring in the game.
Ouachita shot 46 percent from the field (20 of 44) and 67 percent from the line (20 of 30). The Lady Tigers were 10 of 17 from the arc for 59 percent. OBU grabbed 38 rebounds.
Jarvis Christian made only 28 percent (16 of 58) of their shots from the field and hit only three of nine from the line. The Lady Bulldogs had 34 rebounds. Claudia Rodriguez led Jarvis Christian with 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Crowder was well pleased with his teams play and added I was very pleased with out defense; if we can control our turnovers- I think we have a lot to look forward to this season.
