ARKADELPHIA - The Ouachita Baptist University Tiger basketball team opened its season Saturday afternoon with a 90-99 loss to Texas A&M University-Commerce, while the Lady Tigers split two games on Friday and Saturday in the Texas Women's University Classic in Denton.
The Tigers were led by point guard T.J. Jones who scored 27 points and dished 11 assists. Jarris Kentle scored 14, with Jordan Cowart adding 12 and Tim Lane with nine rebounds.
Ouachita was hampered with fouls and saw starting forward Mauricio Watson foul out with just 11 minutes of playing time. He retired to the bench with just nine points and six rebounds. Cowart also made an exit with 25 minutes of action.
The Lions (1-0) were paced by Junior Carl Hawkins who near triple-doubled with his 32 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds.
The Lions led most of the first half before the Tigers came back to grab a 50-49 lead with 17:05 remaining.
Commerce bounce back to a two-point 56-54 lead with 14:42 to go before the Lions hit a 16-4 run in the next five minutes.
In addition to Hawkins' numbers, TA9UC's Tyrone Palmer added 23 points, while JoJo Edwards collected 16 points with both grabbing five rebounds.
For the game, Ouachita shot 57 percent (33 of 58) from the field and 67 percent (18 of 27) from the line. The Tigers hit six of 20 from the arc. Commerce connected on 31 of 60 from the field for 52 percent and 29 of 45 from the charity stripe for 64 percent. The Lions were eight of 26 from the three-point distance.
The Tigers' home opener is Monday night, November 20, in a 7 p.m. non-conference game with the Lyon College Scots from Batesville in Bill Vining Arena in the Roy and Christine Sturgis Physical Education Center.
The Lady Tigers opened their 2000-2001 season with a 58-48 win Friday night over the Texas Woman University Pioneers in a game in Denton. On Saturday afternoon in Denton, OBU dropped a 50-46 game to the University of Central Oklahoma Lady Bronchos from Edmond, Oklahoma.
Against TWU, the Lady Tigers were led by Louisiana Tech transfer Crystal Allen with 16 points and seven rebounds. Jennifer Edwards scored 14, while Robyn Anders added 11 and Lyndsey Hawkins responded with 10.
TWU's Jennifer Hall scored 13 as did Amanda Wigley. Hall was the game's leading rebounder with 10.
Ouachita got off to a poor first half start and was behind 28-22 at intermission. The Lady Tigers at that point were only shooting 24 percent (8 of 34) from the field, while TWU was hitting 47 percent (eight of 17). Neither team converted their three point efforts. OBU was zero of nine, while TWU was zero of two from the arc.
The second half was the exact opposite of the first half, with the Lady Tigers shooting 12 of 26 from the field for 46 percent, while TWU was held to eight of 28.
Ouachita's defense forced TWU into 18 turnovers. OBU ended the game with only 11 miscues. The Lady Tigers were outrebounded 44-37.
On Saturday afternoon, the Lady Tigers struggled to hit 30 percent of their efforts (17 of 56) from the field. The only OBU player in double numbers was Allen with 13 points and eight rebounds. Center Christie Massey of UCO was her team's leading scorer with 16 points and six rebounds.
The Lady Tigers actually led at halftime, 24-14. The Lady Bronchos were hitting only 20 percent of their shots (five of 24).
The second half was a nightmare for the Lady Tigers. Only eight of 28 shots from the field found their target, while UCO saw 15 of 28 find the mark.
Ouachita was outrebounded in the non-conference game, 49-37.
The Lady Tigers will play their home opener on Tuesday night, November 21 at 7 p.m. against the East Texas Baptist University Lady Tigers.
