OBU Ends Season with OT Loss

ARKADELPHIA - The Ouachita Baptist University Lady Tigers lost a hard fought battle against the Lady Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville in the semi-final round of the Lone Star Conference Women’s Basketball Championships in Kingsville, Texas on Friday by an overtime score of 82-74.

The loss brought to a close coach Garry Crowder’s best season in five years exiting with a 19-9 season mark and 8-6 and a second place finish in the LSC North Division.

In Kingsville, the Lady Tigers came out strong and kept the lead close for the majority of the first half but OBU star senior guard Jamie Scheppmann of Cove got into foul trouble early and only played seven minutes of the half. The Lady Tigers, seeded second in the LSC North Division, fell to as much as a nine point lead as the Lady Javelinas (21-6), seeded first in the LSC South Division, took a 41-32 lead into halftime.

OBU continued to fall after halftime and went down as much as 13 points but surged back in enough time and came to within one with three minutes left on a lay-up by freshman Jennifer Privitt of Lonoke putting the score at 65-64. TAMUK pulled away again on back to back jumpers by Precious Thibeodeaux to take a five point lead with two minutes remaining. Scheppmann dropped a lay-up and after drawing a foul completed the three point play with a free throw to make the score 69-67. Privitt got a steal with 24 second remaining and took it the length of the court for a lay-up to send the game into overtime tied at 69.

In the extra period, it was all Kingsville as OBU collected seven fouls. The Lady Javelinas capitalized on the opportunity at the charity stripe and took the game by an 82-74 score.

Scheppmann led the Lady Tigers with 24 points on eight of 15 from the field, including three of eight from the three point line and five of five from the free throw line, as well as pulling down seven rebounds and four steals. Privitt added 11 points on the night while senior post Jeannie Kennedy of Bryant contributed 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Leading the Lady Javelinas was Thibodeaux with 24 points, while Patricia Lewandoski added 14 points and Annetta Anglin had 12.

As a team, OBU shot 26 of 63 from the field, including five of 19 from the three point line and 17 of 24 from the charity stripe. Kingsville shot 30 for 78 from the field, including only two for 16 from the three point arc and 20 of 29 from the foul line. The Lady Tigers pulled down 43 rebounds and eight steals while the Lady Javelinas had 50 rebounds and 11 steals.
