OBU Women get OT victory, Tigers Receive Trudging

The Ouachita Baptist University Tigers were on the short end of an 80-49 drubbing from the first place Redmen of Northeastern (OK) State University, while the Lady Tigers slid by the Lady Reds in a 48-44 overtime victory at Jack Dobbins Field House on the NEO campus in Tahlequah Thursday night.
The Tiger fell behind early but went to the locker room at intermission still in the contest with a score of 32-26 in favor of the home team. The Redmen, the Lone Star Conference North Division first place team, came out of half-time on fire and never looked back as they rolled to a 31-point victory over the Tigers.
It was the worst defeat of the year for OBU and continued a five game losing streak. The depth-strong Redmen defeated OBU 72-49 Jan. 29 in Arkadelphia.
The win on Thursday night elevated Northeastern to an 18-3 overall record and 9-0 in the LSC North Division. Ouachita dropped to a 6-13 mark overall and 2-5 in the conference.
Ouachita junior Atif Williams of Tulsa, OK led the Tigers with 20 points on seven of 10 from the field, two of three from the three point line and four of six from the charity stripe. Freshman guard T.J. Jones made 12 points.
Northeastern had four players in double figures- guard Doug Stone score 21, guard Wes Pitcock added 13; forward Randy Keyes contributed 12; and guard Rome Lucky made 10 points. Lucky led both teams in rebounds with seven.
OBU shot 16 of 43 for the game for a 37 percent average, including a dismal two of 17 from the three point arc and 15 of 23 from the foul line. Mike Reynold's team hit only five of 21 field goal attempts in the second half. Meanwhile, NSU was 29 of 54 from the field for 54 percent, including seven of 17 for three points and 15 of 19 from the free throw line. The Redmen won under the boards, pulling down 36 to OBU's 23.
In the evening's first game, the Lady Tigers came out strong and held an 8-2 lead, but NSU would not go away trailing OBU 18-14 at the break. The Lady Tigers never lost the lead in the game, but the Lady Reds held close behind and with 1:32 left in the game Tina Clendining sank a perimeter jumper to tie the game at 41 all and send it into overtime. OBU took over during the extra period and outscored NSU seven to three for the Lady Tigers' first victory of the season in the state of Oklahoma.
Senior guard Jamie Scheppmann of Cove (Van-Cove) again led the Lady Tigers with 16 points on seven of 14 from the field and one of two from the three point arc. Senior post Jeannie Kennedy of Bryant added 14 points for the game on seven of 11 from the field while leading the team with nine rebounds. Freshman guard Jennifer Privitt added 10 points.
The Lady Reds, the league's third place team, were led by forward Melissa Fulmer who scored 23 points, while pulling down five rebounds.
With the victory, the Lady Tigers improve to a 16-4 overall record and protected their lead in the conference with at 6-2 record. The Lady Reds fell to a 12-9 overall record and 5-4 in the conference.
OBU shot 19 of 49 from the field for a 39 percent average, including two of eight for three points and eight of 10 from the free throw line. NSU shot 19 of 50 from the field for 38 percent, including two of 12 from the three point range and four of seven from the charity stripe. The Lady Tigers also led the Lady Reds in rebounds 38-26.
Ouachita won despite having 26 turnovers and having the ball stolen eight times.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers will travel to Edmond, OK, on Saturday, Feb 12 to play the Bronchos and Lady Bronchos of the University of Central Oklahoma in Lone Star Conference North Division games at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively, at Hamilton Field House.
