OBU Basketball Splits With UAM
ARKADELPHIA-On Thursday night, the Ouachita Baptist University Lady Tigers gave coach Garry Crowder his 100 victory in sixth years at the helm in defeating the UA-Monticello Cotton Blossoms, 68-58, while the Tigers dropped a 95-84 decision to the Boll Weevils in Gulf South Conference action at Bill Vining Arena in the Roy and Christine Sturgis Physical Education Center.
The win by OBU advanced the Lady Tigers' record to 16-5, 8-3, while the Blossoms fell to 4-17, 2-10. On the men's side, OBU dropped to 5-16, 2-8 and the Weevils moved to 15-7, 8-4.
The Lady Tigers were led by junior guard Robyn Anders and Jennifer Edwards, both with 14 points, while point guard Tracy Denney and guard Crystal Allen responded with 13 points, each. Edwards pulled down nine defensive rebounds and was 10 of 13 from the line.
The Blossoms were keyed in the game by Sharon Jones with 15 points, followed by Mandy Hillis with 14, Zell Harris with 11, and Kayla Pilgrim with 10 points.
Ouachita led by one point at half, 25-24.
At intermission, OBU was hitting 31 percent (10 of 32) of its field goal efforts, while UAM was connecting on just 36 percent (10 of 27) of its own efforts.
The second half saw the Lady Tigers slowly regain their shooting finesse finally closing to a 50 percent average (13 of 26) for the second stanza. The Lady Tigers' defense held UAM to a 36 percent (11 of 31) average in the second half.
The Lady Tigers were 19 of 27 from the line for 70 percent, while UAM was 14 of 21 for 67 percent. OBU outrebounded UAM, 44-39.
Free throw shooting spelled the difference in the men's game with UAM connecting on 31 of 34 from the charity stripe. OBU was 11 of 16 from the line.
The Tigers were led by forward Mauricio Watson with 22 points, followed by T.J. Jones and Jarris Kentle, both with 21 points. Kentle had eight rebounds. Rodney Traylor and Dennis Harris both had 19 points for the winners, while Steve Green added 18, and Jun McClain scored 16. Harris led both teams in rebounding with 10. The Weevils outrebounded Ouachita, 43-29.
As a team, the Tigers were 34 of 68 for 50 percent from the field, while the Weevils were 30 of 65 for 46 percent.
Going into Thursday night's game with OBU, the Weevils were the GSC's second place team.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers travel to Conway on Monday to face the Sugar Bears and Bears from the University of Central Arkansas. Going into Thursday night's games, the Sugar Bears (16-5, 8-3) were a game ahead of the Lady Tigers in the GSC standings, while the Bears were leading the GSC West Division with an 11-10, 8-3 record.
