Ouachita Basketball Teams Split With Christian Brothers

by Mac Sisson

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE-Robyn Anders' 19 points helped the Ouachita Baptist University Lady Tigers to a tough 60-55 conference road victory Monday night over the Christian Brothers University Lady Buccaneers in Memphis. The OBU Tigers fell to CBU, 82-65, in the late game.

With the victory at De Lasalle Gymnasium, coach Garry Crowders' Lady Tigers remain in the hunt for a Gulf South Conference crown with a 14-4, 6-2 record. The Lady Bucs fell to 7-11, 3-5. Mike Reynolds' Tigers lost their sixth consecutive game to fall to 3-15, 1-7. The Buccaneers saw their record rise to 8-10, 2-6.

Anders, a junior guard from Grapevine, Texas was seven of 10 from the field, including a perfect two of two from three-point distance. She hit three of three at the free throw line, garnered five rebounds and dished out four assists in the winning endeavor. Sophomore transfer guard Crystal Allen scored 11 points. Ouachita's Jennifer Edwards led both teams in rebounding with 13.

Crystal Howard of CBU led her team in scoring with 18 points, followed by Mary Buford with 12. Howard also had 11 rebounds.

With 8:52 remaining in the first half, the Lady Tigers had pulled to a 10 point lead. However, the Lady Bucs' offense responded to chip away the advantage to pull within one of the Lady Tigers at halftime, 31-30.

The second half saw CBU take a quick lead 33-31 on a three-pointer by Sarah Condra. That was the only lead the Lady Bucs would see for the game, as Ouachita came back to take the lead with 17:20 remaining.

For the game, OBU shot 43 percent (22 of 51) from the field, including six of 15 from the arc for 40 percent. At the line, the Lady Tigers hit 10 of 13 for 77 percent. An aggressive Lady Tiger defense contributed to CBU hitting only 37 percent (21 of 57) of their efforts from the field. The Lady Bucs went five of 17 from the distance for 29 percent. At the line, CBU was eight of 11. Ouachita outrebounded the home team, 38-31.

In the men's game, the Buccaneers (8-10, 2-6) broke a four game losing streak to take the Gulf South Conference win over the Tigers.

The Tigers jumped on the scoreboard first and led only three minutes in the game, but a Adam Heitzman three-pointer at the 17 minute mark lit a struggling Buccaneer offense as the Memphis team took a 40-29 halftime edge.

The Tigers shot poorly in the second stanza hitting only 42 percent (10 of 24) from the field, while CBU was making 13 of 27 for 48 percent. CBU also owned the boards for the game collecting 39 rebounds to Ouachita's 25.

Heitzman paced the Buccaneers with 25 points shooting an impressive 63 percent from the field. Brandon Corbin added 15 points.

Ouachita forward Mauricio Watson led the scoring for the Tigers with 16 points, while freshman center Richard Whaley contributed 14 points.

The Lady Tigers and Tigers are back in action Thursday night with GSC games in Arkadelphia against Delta State University. The women's game will tipoff at 6 p.m., followed by the men's contest at 8 p.m.
