Behind the 21-point effort of senior guard Jamie Scheppmann, the Ouachita Baptist University Lady Tigers claimed their 10th win of the season against one loss in a 78-61 decision Saturday night over the Southern Arkansas University Riderettes at Mulerider Fieldhouse in Magnolia.
Scheppmann was six of 13 from the field, and three of six from the three-point distance in the non-conference tilt. She hit six of eight from the free throw line, dished out four assists, claimed four steals and grabbed seven rebounds in her team's second win of the season over the 2-10 SAU club.
Another Lady Tiger guard, Vivi Dees, a teammate of Scheppmann's at Van-Cove High School, came off the bench to add 15 points for coach Garry Crowder's club, that is ranked 23rd in the latest USA Today/Women's Basketball Coaches Association national poll. Tiger forward Corrie Gilliland of Paragould was also in double digits with 13 points.
Ouachita senior post Jeannie Kennedy of Bryant led all rebounders with 11, including eight on the defensive end.
SAU was led be Meah Biley with 15 points, followed by Marsha Prescott's 12, while Shavonne Ford added 10.
Both teams had rough first halves with SAU shooting only 31 percent(eight of 23) while OBU hit 39 percent (nine of 23) of its shots from the field. Both teams heated up in the second half with OBU finally ending the game connecting on 24 of 54 for 44 percent, while the Lady 'Riders went 20 of 57 for 35 percent.
The Lady Tigers were eight of 19 from the three point distance for 72 percent, while SAU went five of 14 for 36 percent. OBU led at the line, hitting on 22 of 27 for 82 percent, while the Magnolia team was 16 of 21 for 76 percent.
The Lady Tigers narrowly won the rebound war, grabbing 37 to SAU's 34.
OBU led SAU, 35-29, at half-time.
The Lone Star Conference North Division race enters its first week on Thursday night as OBU travels to Ada, Okla., to face the East Central University Lady Tigers at 6 p.m. On Saturday, it's another conference game against the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Lady Savages at 6 p.m. in Durant, Okla.
