The Ouachita Baptist University Lady Tigers returned to their winning ways on Tuesday, defeating the University of Montevallo 73-55 Tuesday afternoon in the Ravine Classic.
OBU, which suffered its first loss of the season on Monday, improved to 9-1 on the season. The Lady Tigers moved up two spots to No. 23 in the USA Today NCAA Division II women’s college basketball poll released before the loss.
A 15-6 run allowed the Lady Tigers to turn a 22-20 lead into a more comfortable 37-26 lead in the final minute of the first half. Montevallo scored the final four points of the half to get within seven points at the break.
Ouachita, however, erased any thoughts of a comeback by opening the second half with a 17-5 run that was capped off by Jennifer Privitt’s basket with 13 minutes to play in the game. OBU’s lead was 13 when the Lady Tigers went on another run, an 11-0 spurt that made it 73-49 in the final minute of the contest.
Senior guard Jamie Scheppmann led Ouachita with 25 points to go along with nine rebounds, five steals and three assists. Jeannie Kennedy added 11 points, 11 boards and three steals, while Robyn Anders contributed 11 points, four assists and a pair of steals. Corrie Gilliland finished with nine points and three assists, and Privitt added six points and three assists. OBU forced 32 turnovers.
Erica Harris led Montevallo (4-6) with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Tenasha Evans added 18 points and four steals.
The Lady Tigers’ next game is Saturday, when both the Lady Tigers and Tigers visit Magnolia to take on Southern Arkansas University. The women’s game begins at 6 p.m. with the men scheduled to start at 8 p.m. In the meantime, the OBU men play Thursday night at home against the University of Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevels at 7 p.m. in OBU’s Bill Vining Arena in the Roy and Christene Sturgis Physical Education Center.
