Tigers Lose in Oklahoma
by Mac Sisson
ADA, OKLAHOMA-A dismal shooting performance doomed the efforts of the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers Monday night as they dropped a 72-55 decision to the East Central University Tigers in a non-conference game at the Kerr Activities Center in Ada, Oklahoma.
The loss by Mike Reynolds' club extended a five game losing streak and dropped the Tigers to a 2-9, 0-1 season record. East Central, a member of the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference, advanced to an 8-3 record.
Ouachita and East Central both had trouble getting started with East Central taking a four point advantage, 24-20 into the lockerroom at halftime. Ouachita, playing just 48 hours after having lost to fellow Gulf South Conference foe Delta State University in a game Saturday in Cleveland, MS, improved offensively in the second half but not to the extent of ECU as the Okies took the victory.
Ouachita was led by guard Jarris Kentle and forward Mauricio Watson, both with 13 points. Tim Lane scored 11 at the forward position. Kentle claimed 10 rebounds, four off the defensive end.
But, the Tigers had their worst overall shooting performance of the season hitting only 31 percent of their field goal shots (18 of 59). For the first half, OBU again hit a new season low in connecting on only 24 percent of their field goal shots (7 of 29). The Tigers, who lack experience at the post position, showed again that weakness with no points coming from the starting center position and being outmuscled in team rebounding yielding a 54-36 margin to the hometown East Central Tigers.
Ouachita shot 35 percent from the three point distance, hitting eight of 23. At the line, OBU was 11 of 15 for 73 percent.
East Central was led by guard B.J. Davis who scored 19 points, followed by Jason Wilkerson with 11 points. Demarcus Bolton led all rebounders with 13, including 11 defensive boards. As a team, ECU shot 37 percent from the field (26 of 71). From the arc, ECU hit nine of 29 for 31 percent and went 11 of 17 for 65 percent. East Central suffered only eight turnovers, while OBU was credited with 12.
OBU reenters Gulf South Conference play on Thursday night when the Tigers host the Arkansas Tech University Wonder Boys at 8 p.m. in Ouachita's Bill Vining Arena in the Roy and Christine Sturgis Physical Education Center.
