Tigers Lose to Tigers

Mac Sisson

ARKADELPHIA- The East Central University Tigers from Ada, Oklahoma defeated the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers, 90-58, in a game played Saturday afternoon at OBU's Bill Vining Arena in the Roy and Christine Sturgis Physical Education Center.

The Oklahoma Tigers (5-1) controlled every phase of the game to offset the home court advantage of the OBU Tigers (2-6).

East Central, under longtime coach Wayne Cobb, blistered the nets and claimed the boards on the way to defeat their former Long Star Conference neighbor.

ECU shot 54 percent (37 of 69) from the field, while OBU, now a member of the NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference, shot 40 percent (20 of 50). The boards, both offensively and defensively, also belonged to the visiting Tigers, as ECU was charted with 36 rebounds compared to Ouachita's 14.

In three-point shooting, ECU was five of 15, while OBU went five for 20. At the line, ECU was 11 of 14 for 79 percent, while OBU hit 13 of 14 for 93 percent.

ECU came into the year as the solid number two pick in the pre-season LSC poll. The Tigers showed quickly Saturday that the poll was a clear indicator of their strength. With just 10 minutes off the clock, ECU was up 22-8 and on its way to a comfortable 46-27 halftime lead. ECU's largest margin was a 21 point lead, 46-25, with eight seconds to play on a goal by DeMarcus Bolton.

The second half was a mirror of the first, as ECU pulled out to a 35 point lead with 5:44 to play on a bucket by Tyrone Rayson.

Ouachita was led in scoring by Mauricio Watson with 22 points and five rebounds. Jarris Kentle and Tim Lane both added 12.

For ECU, Jason Wilkerson scored 19 points, while Ryan Eaves and B.J. Davis were credited with 17 of 16 points, respectively. Wilkerson, a 6-4 sophomore guard from Greenville, Texas, led all rebounders with eight.

Ouachita is off until December 30 when they travel to Ada to play ECU on their home court at 2 p.m. The next home game for Mike Reynolds' Tigers will be a January 3 game against Texas Wesleyan University from Fort Worth at 4 p.m. in Bill Vining Arena.
