OBU Tigers grab win

Mac Sisson

ARKADELPHIA - The Ouachita Baptist University Tigers won their second game of the year Monday night, 101-92, as they defeated the Arkansas Baptist College Buffaloes from Little Rock at OBU's Bill Vining Arena in the Roy and Christine Sturgis Physical Education Center.

Five Tigers scored in double numbers as the Tigers (2-4) erased a three-game losing streak. Ouachita was led by forward Mauricio Watson with 22 points and seven rebounds. The Panama City, Panama, native hit nine of 17 from the field, three of four from the arc and one of four from the line.

Behind him in scoring were starting guard Jarris Kentle and reserve freshman guard Jordan Cowart both with 16 points, followed by Hassan Conteh with 15 and point guard T.J. Jones who ended the night with 14 points and six assists. Ouachita's Tim Lane led all rebounders with eight and added to that by scoring seven points.

The Tigers led at half-time, 53-42, and were shooting 63 percent (22 of 35) from the field to ABC's 52 percent (17 of 33). Ouachita fell in shooting the second half (15 of 34 for 44 percent), while Arkansas Baptist (1-8) was steady at the helm (17 of 32 for 53 percent).

A third of the field goals made in the game were three-pointers as both clubs relied a great deal on their perimeter shooting. The Buffaloes hit 15 of 29 three-pointers for 52 percent, while OBU connected on nine of 16 for 64 percent.

The taller Tigers led in rebounding, 37-24. The scrappy OBU defense forced eight steals from the Buffaloes.

Arkansas Baptist was paced in scoring by Gerald Henderson with 19, while Kenneth Halk and Donnie Cheers both scored 18. Chato Kims added 15.

The only time Arkansas Baptist led in the scoring was in the opening when OBU was given a foul by the referee before the game because of a dunk by Conteh in pre-game practice. Dunking in pre-game is forbidden by NCAA rules. In place of the opening tip-off, Halk went to the line and scored one point. From that point on, though, it was all purple and gold, as Mike Reynolds' team kept a constant seven to 15 point lead over the visitors.

Ouachita increased the lead to 21 points in the second half on a bucket by Jones with 4:55 to play.

The Tigers will entertain the Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions in a non-conference game at Vining Arena at 7 p.m. Thursday. Earlier this season, the Lions out-dueled the Tigers, 99-90, in a game played at Commerce. On Saturday at 2 p.m., the Tigers will face another old Lone Star Conference foe in the East Central University Tigers from Ada, Okla., in a game at Vining Arena.
