ARKADELPHIA - The Ouachita Baptist University Tigers were defeated by the Louisiana Tech University Bulldogs, 90-51, on Tuesday night at Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston, while the OBU Lady Tigers downed a stubborn East Texas Baptist University Lady Tiger team, 85-81, in action also on Tuesday night in OBU's Bill Vining Arena in the Roy and Christine Sturgis Physical Education Center.

The Tigers (1-2) experienced a very poor night in shooting (18 of 50) from the field, while Tech (2-1) enjoyed a prosperous night (33 of 59) on their season home court opener.

The taller Bulldogs also out dueled OBU on the boards winning the rebounding war, 41-26. Ouachita had 21 turnovers, from which Tech converted 15 points. At the line, Tech was 17 for 24, while OBU went 10 of 20. The Bulldogs had seven treys, while the Tigers responded with five.

Tech had four players in double digits, led by guard Gerrod Henderson with 22. For the Tigers, forward Mauricio Watson scored 10 points as did reserve forward Hassan Conteh.

Tech led 47-28 at halftime.

The Lady Tigers opened their 2000-2001 home season on Tuesday night and experienced a real challenge from Division III East Texas Baptist from Marshall. The Texans had four seniors and one junior on their starting five and they provided all the ballgame the Division II Lady Tigers wanted.

"Give East Texas their due," said OBU coach Garry Crowder. "They provided us a different up-tempo style look from that we are accustomed to seeing. It is a guard oriented offense with a great deal of pressure on the ball on the defensive end. We are used to seeing an in-your-face down in the paint challenge."

Ouachita was led by junior wing Robyn Anders who scored 23 points and dished out five assists. "She played an outstanding game," said Crowder. Behind her was Crystal Allen with 19 points, Kristen Hurdle with 11 and Jennifer Edwards with 10. Kamilia Moss for ETBU scored 23 points.

The Lady Tigers outrebounded East Texas, 31-22. Junior forward Jennifer Edwards of Ouachita was the game's leading rebounder with five.

One sore spot for Crowder was the 27 turnovers for OBU. "East Texas' type of play lends itself to that, but we still should have been more focused in ball handling. We have nine new players on the court, trying to learn a new system and develop a chemistry among themselves. It is early in the season and I feel good about where we are, despite some of the setbacks in a game such as this one. We are playing hard."

Ouachita (2-1) won despite shooting only 45 percent (29 of 65) from the field, while East Texas (0-2) was hitting a very respectable 53 percent (30 of 57). Ouachita got the better at the foul line (21 of 26) for 81 percent, while ETBU went 17 of 28 for 61 percent.

Ouachita led at halftime, 45-42, but got off to a slow start allowing ETBU a seven point advantage before setting sail and tying the score at 11-11 with 15:26 to play in the first half. "We just hung in there those first few minutes," said Crowder. "We made a few mental errors, but came back."

The Tigers will next fact the Lyon College Scots at Becknall Gymnasium in Batesville on November 30 at 7 p.m. Coach Mike Reynolds will follow that road journey, by taking his Tigers to Fort Worth on December 2 to face Texas Wesleyan College. The next home game for the Tigers is December 4 against the Arkansas Baptist College Buffaloes from Little Rock at 7 p.m. in Bill Vining Arena.

The Lady Tigers will next face the Lyon College Pipers at Becknall Gymnasium in Batesville on November 28 at 7 p.m.Central Baptist College from Conway will be the Lady Tigers' opponent on December 1 in a 6 p.m. game at Vining Arena.
